We didn’t expect the trailer for the second instalment of the 28 Years Later trilogy to arrive so soon. It’s a chilling return within just months, and fortunately, we don’t have to wait for years.
The 28 Years Later The Bone Temple trailer has arrived, giving us an unexpected, unnerving, and unmissable surprise with its early release.
Plot details of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple (2026)
Directed by Nia DaCosta and taking Danny Boyle’s legacy of the 28 Years Later trilogy forward, The Bone Temple was shot back-to-back with its predecessor, but is now given a green light after knowing that 28 Years Later (2025) is a huge success.
The official synopsis of The Bone Temple mentions the continuation of Spike’s (played by Alfie Williams) story, who joined Jimmy Crystal (Jack O’Connell) at the end of 28 Years Later. Spike learns that Jimmy’s cult-like killings of the infected people are a nightmare that he can’t escape.
Another narrative involves Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes), who is seen in a shocking new relationship with the alpha zombie. The rest of the scenes take us on a journey of vile violence, which Nia DaCosta herself warned us about.

Breakdown of 28 Years Later The Bone Temple trailer
Firstly, Dr. Kelson’s attempt to touch the alpha male who is standing in front of him without aiming to harm the doctor is surprising to watch. The trailer seems to hint at the doctor’s attempt to learning to live with the infected ones. Perhaps, he has learned to survive with them. He is no longer afraid of them.
Moreover, Spike is seen upset, living with the brutal Jimmy gang, whose name was seen written on the walls in the first part of the trilogy. Initially, it seemed that Jimmy would be a lifesaver, a hero, but that does not seem to be the case after watching The Bone Temple’s trailer.
His gang is ruthless and does not mind killing anyone with strange masks on in every new way possible. It suggests that the film is going to be as barbaric as one could imagine.
Throughout the trailer, we can hear an old-fashioned recording- the words that try to predict the future with images of happy people boarded on a train in front of our eyes. But now they are gone- the scene cuts to the infected place by the rage virus.
An interesting spot in the trailer comes when Jimmy and his cult members invade Dr. Kelson’s bone temple, and Spike is terrified when Jimmy asks him if he is ready.
We have seen in the previous part that the doctor helped Spike to have some last moments with his dying mother and save a child from the pregnant zombie. Spike has regard for the doctor and apparently does not want to hurt him, which explains the dread on his face.
Director’s vision for the film
Nia DaCosta herself mentioned that the first installment in the 28 Years Later trilogy is about the nature of family, the second is about the nature of evil, while the third, which is still in talks, will be about redemption.
The poster of The Bone Temple also mentions “Fear is the new faith” for the same reason.

Besides, everyone is excited for Cillian Murphy’s reprise as Jim, his first role in 28 Days Later. As per IGN, Murphy will appear briefly in The Bone Temple but will be seen more extensively in the trilogy’s third part.
On the whole, it is great to have a sequel soon after its predecessor was released since we don’t have to wait for decades. It is usually this waiting time period when we have forgotten most of the story. We sometimes have to watch the first part as soon as we watch the trailer for the upcoming sequel, so that we recall the storyline of the previous part, thinking it will help us to understand the new film.
Thankfully, the makers of the 28 Years Later trilogy recognized this fact and did not want their fans to suffer and wait for so long.
