Last year at the Glasgow Film Festival, James McAvoy spoke about his upcoming directorial debut, California Schemin’. This year, he returned to the festival alongside the film’s cast and crew, proudly presenting the finished project and celebrating the work they had created together. The film served as the closing-night selection at the Glasgow Film Festival on March 8, 2026. It previously made its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September last year.
We have got some inside details on James McAvoy’s directorial debut California Schemin’, its true story origins, trailer highlights, and release date announcement.
Plot details of California Schemin’ (2026)
California Schemin’ comes from an autobiography written by Gavin Bain with the same name. He and Billy Boyd were the hip-hop duo called “Silibil N’ Brains,” who came into the music industry with some ambitions. They were mocked for their accent despite being originally Scottish.
They recorded their own tracks after getting backlash for a fake accent and showed up in London, claiming to be childhood friends with Eminem. This helped them in landing a massive record deal, hefty advance payments, and appearances on MTV. However, soon everything bobbed up as a hoax.
Catch the electrifying trailer here:
The trailer shows a fast-paced, gritty account of two Scottish musicians, Gavin (played by Seamus McLean Ross) and Billy (Samuel Bottomley), who portray the so-called American rappers, ready to con the music industry. The trailer shows their transition from their early auditions, where they were laughed at, to gaining fame as “Silibil N’ Brains.”
They plan to fool the world, when Gavin pointed out, “It wasn’t the music they were laughing at,” to which his pal added, “It was us.” The two underdogs get disappointed, but they turn it into something radical to get their desired breakthrough.
The aspiring rappers resort to creating new identities, telling people they are from the US rap scene, and getting shocking reactions to make their story believable. The blend of comedy and absurdity adds a bold edge to the story while highlighting just how ridiculous their scheme truly is.
Why James McAvoy chose California Schemin’?
James McAvoy is Scottish himself. According to the BBC, McAvoy was excited to do something that resonated with his own life and the place he grew up in. He said,
“I was keen to do something entertaining, but I was also keen to do something about people from a background like my own – lower income, lower socio-economic level on the ladder and not a lot of opportunities.” [Source]
He was of the view that people from such backgrounds do not have a platform to share their stories, and that these stories need to be at the forefront. California Schemin’ was a great chance for him to tell a high-stakes story with real losses, combining all the elements he wanted to work on.
He further explained that although he had never been into hip-hop music, the story connected with him on a personal level, and he was forced to come up with this story with “authenticity.”
McAvoy felt that the story is more about friendship and relations rather than fake rappers or musical achievements. Their relations were all about getting fame at a price, but did that price involve their own relationship?
Early reviews from critics have been glowing, with the film currently holding a 96 percent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. The critics found this film “alive with magnetism, comedy, and sincerity.” The critics found it to be a solid directorial debut as the two actors outshone with their allure, even when they were making wrong decisions.
The reviews fit well with the director’s vision, as the reviewers noted the narrative to be a character study of two friends rather than a mere con story. They were chasing the same dream, and their chemistry drove their loyalty, driving the film’s emotional stakes just as their deception begins to strain their bond.
This aligns with the director’s focus on human relationships rather than spectacle with McAvoy’s empathetic directorial lens. The audience would know why the two main leads rely on each other and how their socio-economic backgrounds come into play with their mistakes, moral compromises, and emotional tensions.
