2026 has been the year of fabulous horror, and another buzzworthy upcoming release is going to add to the list. The 13th-century gothic horror film stays true to Robert Egger’s trademark method of blending folklore with brutal reality, and we are here for it!
The Werwulf 2026 trailer has just been out, and the black-and-white trailer is released, which verifies that the flick is shot on 35mm film, with the same grain structure as seen in The Lighthouse (2019). The upcoming pic has his most trusted and frequent collaborators, including Lily-Rose Depp and Willem Dafoe.
The project also extends his collaboration with Focus Features, as it did for his previous films: The Northman (2022) and Nosferatu (2024). Sjón teams up once more with Eggers to co-write the script.
Plot details of Werwulf (2026)
While the official synopsis is still missing, the film is reportedly based on a mysterious creature terrorizing a local village. As the attacks continue, local myths and ancient superstitions take over the town.
Lily-Rose Depp plays the werewolf’s wife, while Aaron Taylor-Johnson is the werewolf himself. The early footage hints that her character may struggle with his humanity as the beast within gradually takes control, fueling the village’s growing paranoia and violence.

Director’s vision for the film
According to Newsweek, Eggers wanted the film to be as close to history as possible. And for that, the cast had to work with two Oxford professors to work on perfect 1300s Middle English-era dialogue. He said,
“Then worked extensively with a dialect coach on a way to temper the pronunciation in a way that would be understandable to modern audiences.” [Source]
He likes authenticity in his work, and therefore, his period-based films have been remarkable. They worked with a real wolf and learned a lot about its behavior, which was necessary for Aaron’s character and its veracity. It was mandatory to do so since his interactions with Lily were based on his wolf-like performance, adding layers of legitimacy to the flick.
He further revealed that Lily-Rose Depp’s role is central to the story, as she is performing her most “transformative” role ever. She had collaborated with Eggers in Nosferatu (2024) and had been phenomenal. However, this time, Eggers confirmed that she is entirely different from any role that she has ever performed.
What does the Werwulf 2026 trailer reveal?
The trailer opens up with a glimpse of how Aaron, portraying a farmer, came by the curse. When he was young, he followed a man into the cave and came out a changed man after the demonic ritual that possibly transpired inside. The rest of the trailer gives shots of the shocking transformation and the havoc that is wreaked later on the village.
The farmer grows up, and most of the clip showcases beastly changing bodies with blood splatters, with naturalistic lighting accurately depicting the 13th-century farmhouses.
The tagline of the film says, “A harrowing tale of devotion, damnation, and the devil within.” Rather than leaning heavily into modern monster tropes, the film seems to focus more on historical authenticity, folklore, and psychological terror. The period realism is deeply embedded, explicitly demonstrated via the trailer. The fear of the unknown in a medieval community where old beliefs are rooted as a curse would be a fun angle in a creature feature never seen before.
Knowing Eggers, we could assume a bare line between humans and beasts, as witnessed in The Witch (2015), The Lighthouse, and Nosferatu. It would be fascinating to watch how fear and myth shape human behavior, especially when the roots are connected to superstition and fantasy.
