How far would someone go to survive when the world outside begins to collapse? Javier Bardem’s Bunker is putting this very question to the test in his upcoming drama-thriller, which was recently acquired by Sony Pictures Classics (SPC).
According to Deadline, Sony Classics has closed a deal for Javier Bardem’s Bunker for distribution in North America, Southeast Asia, and worldwide Airline (excluding France). The pic is written and directed by Oscar winner Florian Zeller. His debut feature, The Father (2020), won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Film Nation Entertainment is handling the international sales of the film while SPC, CAA Media Finance, and WME are handling the domestic ones.
The pic is produced by Federica Sainte-Rose for Blue Morning Pictures along with Fernando Bovaira and Simon de Santiago of Mod Productions. Alice Dawson, Pathé’s Ardavan Safaee, and Mediawan’s Perre-Antoine are co-producers.
The executive producers include Mariano Cohn, Gaston Duprat, Andres Duprat, Emanuel Nunez, Fernando Sokolowicz, and Helen Marti.
Sainte-Rose went on to explain how it was working with Zeller.
“What excites me most about working with Florian on Bunker is the bold new direction he’s taking as a filmmaker. This project marks a clear tonal shift—unsettling and cinematically daring, Bunker speaks to the glaring contradictions that exist in modern society. The exploration of fears of the future, from ecological threats to rising social inequality, makes this film both urgent and relevant.” [Source]
The pic stars Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men, Cape Fear show), Penelope Cruz (Vanilla Sky), Stephen Graham (Adolescence), Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood), and Patrick Schwarzenegger (The White Lotus).
Bardem and Cruz have been a real-life couple for the past 16 years. They have appeared in seven films together, including Everybody Knows (2018), Loving Pablo (2017), Jamón, Jamón (1992), Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008), The Counselor (2013), Don’t Tempt Me (Sin noticias de Dios) (2001) and Carne trémula (Live Flesh) (1997).
What is Javier Bardem’s Bunker about?
Bunker focuses on an architect who accepts a morally ambiguous project of building a survival bunker for a tech billionaire. His wife is not in favor of the decision and begins to question their marriage after 17 years.
The emotional and moral challenges faced by the couple, surrounded by the world’s tension, would remain the focal point of the film. It could include exploring their own fears, doubts, and dilemmas that run in the modern era.
Reports suggest that Zeller crafted 80% of the film in the Spanish language, keeping Cruz and Bardem in mind. He was inspired by the couple’s long-lasting relationship and wanted to blend their emotional authenticity with the complex storyline, aiming to “blur reality and fiction.”
What is the terrifying question that puts a couple’s marriage to the test?
Survival shelters are nothing new to this world, as most of them were built and used during World Wars I and II. However, a survival bunker for one wealthy person poses a serious question of ethics.
Is one rich person allowed to have all the privileges of surviving a global catastrophe while millions of people are left behind? It is not a mere construction project but a possible rift in the married couple’s relationship.
The husband and wife have their own personal beliefs. The story could indicate that the husband deemed it a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, while the other may question whether they are contributing to inequality. The massive paycheck could lure the husband into seizing the opportunity, while the real test is whether to sell his skills or their principles.
The irony is evident: building someone a shelter while their own marriage begins to feel unstable. Building a fortress for someone else while seeing the subtle cracks in their own relationship is only because of one question: who actually deserves to survive?

When is Bunker releasing?
Bunker does not have a confirmed release date from Sony Pictures Classics yet, but is expected to start its festival run at the end of 2026, followed by a theatrical run in early 2027.
