Tom Cruise has risked it all to capture our attention, from hanging off airplanes and scaling skyscrapers to pushing the limits of human endurance underwater. But this time, his role, which took years in the making, might be just one of the most unforgettable performances of his career.

Our Digger 2026 review would explore Cruise’s quirky performance, Iñárritu’s audacious approach to political and environmental satire, and the film’s overall thought-provoking commentary on corporate greed, religious delusion, and humanity’s indifference to impending catastrophe.

Plot details of Digger (2026)

The political satire drama, Digger, centers on an oil tycoon, Digger Rickwell (Tom Cruise), whose oil extraction in Alaska causes disastrous ecological consequences. He sets out on a mission to prove himself right by controlling the political narrative rather than taking responsibility.

Actors’ performance in Digger (2026)

Tom Cruise and Riz Ahmed stood out to me in the film. Obviously, Tom Cruise takes all the spotlight due to his eccentric and over-the-top performance. His aging in heavy prosthetics fairly complemented his character, as his affluence and arrogance channeled a larger corporate greed, which was evident in his and the other similar characters’ demeanor.

Cruise’s performance goes theatrical with Riz Ahmed’s Dr. Ganesh, who portrays a grounded yet explosive head of environmental safety. He knows about the global climate crisis and the financial risks the ice crack could cause, which is the result of Digger’s ignorant actions. He is intense and loud, which Digger likes, and his performance is appealing enough to now include him in early awards buzz for his supporting performance.

The supporting cast, John Goodman as President Compson and Sandra Hüller as Emma Rockwell, have left a notable mark in this dark comedy. Goodman’s President has limitless greed and, paired with his commanding as well as expressive performance, makes him appear like dynamite. Since the situations become comedic and absurd, his unhinged acting blends perfectly well.

Similarly, Huller’s Emma is the half-sister and business partner of Digger and is hungry for power, position, and respect. She is equally terrified of the fact that their company is in danger, which is evident in her outrageous voice and actions. Despite her small role, her acting was focused and sharp, which added to her strong screen presence.

What do critics add to Digger 2026 review?

The critics’ consensus does not approve of Digger much, as it says:

“A stylized satire whose audacious design proves too mannered for some of the laughs to smoothly land, Digger is a bold swing of the shovel by Tom Cruise and Alejandro González Iñárritu that misses as often as it strikes gold.” [Source]

Fans’ reaction

The audience is kind enough to grant Digger a better score, as they found it “a complete work of art,” and with Cruise’s “magnetic” performance, the criticism was quite baffling for some. They believed it was probably due to the timing of the film, but it does not override the fact that the storyline and comedic twist are too good to be snubbed.

Is it worth watching?

For me, it is one of the best films of 2026, which needs to be a definitive contender in the next year’s Oscars Best Picture category. I say this not only because of the Oscar-winning director and Tom Cruise’s name attached to the project but also because of the film’s profound underlying message and the way it resonates with me on a deeply personal level. Its thematic depth and emotional impact make it deserving of recognition among the year’s finest cinematic achievements.

It is a daring move that an experimental satire is clad in humor and apparently does not put blame on anyone in society while still managing to reflect all sides of the catastrophic complexities. The modern society’s indifference is aptly put forward in the last scene, where they are busy entertaining themselves while the real catastrophe is lying just around them, which they themselves choose to ignore. Why are the corporations to blame then?

Even the religious subversions feel comical as the powerful people use prayers for their own purpose. For example, when the food runs out and Digger prays, as a result of which he gets a divine bounty of food, it is actually a tragic, hallucinatory state of affairs where the ultimate delusion of those in power makes them narcissistic, trying their best to escape reality. The director has made an intelligent demonstration of God in such situations where God becomes less of a source of moral accountability and more a supposed guarantor of their entitlement. The marriage of political and philosophical angles is exceptional.

I feel short of all words of praise for the masterful cinematography from Emmanuel Lubezki. The stunning visual design, shifting aspect ratios, and smooth gliding and set changes create a distinct visual experience. These are the same techniques that we witnessed in Birdman (2014), as his roving camera moves in perfect sync with the highly elaborate structures built by the production designer Dennis Gassner.

What we liked

  • Tom Cruise’s glorious performance
  • Riz Ahmed’s explosive supporting performance
  • Outstanding supporting cast
  • Fearless political and religious satire
  • A thought-provoking environmental message
  • Emmanuel Lubezki’s masterful cinematography

What could be better

  • An occasionally overindulgent approach
  • A deliberately abrasive narrative
