After months of speculation, Brad Pitt’s Formula 1 blockbuster is roaring back into the spotlight with exciting new developments. Apple Original Films is moving forward with delivering more of what fans loved, and Warner Bros. is ready to distribute the F1 movie sequel.
The producer of F1: The Movie (2025), Jerry Bruckheimer, has confirmed that a follow-up to the original is in the works, as per BBC. The British racing driver and F1 movie producer, Lewis Hamilton, is involved in the process.
The film is currently nominated for Best Picture at the upcoming Oscars 2026. Revisit the trailer here:
With an IMDb rating of 7.6 and an 82 percent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, the producer is now confident that they can step into the next stage with a confirmation for the sequel. Bruckheimer was on cloud nine when he heard of the film’s nomination for the Best Picture category.
He further went on to express his excitement as,
“It was a long journey to get the movie made because we had to endure a couple of strikes – but in the end, the movie entertained audiences around the world…I never worked with Brad Pitt before, and it’s really a thrill to work with Brad.” [Source]
He was of the view that the changes taking place in the industry, particularly due to massive studio mergers, artificial intelligence (AI), politics, and production cuts, have contributed to the meager level of entertainment being delivered to the audience in the past. Filmmakers share the responsibility, as they have failed to deliver the kind of content audiences truly want to see.
However, he is still “optimistic,” as the people haven’t grown wary and still expect genuine entertainment to be on the way. The viewers have proved their love for F1: The Movie, which has given the team the much-needed confidence to move on with a sequel.
Cast details of the F1 movie sequel
The producer did not disclose any news on the casting, but when asked whether Brad Pitt would reprise his role as Sonny Hayes, he said that he would “of course” be involved in the casting decisions.
Brad Pitt admitted he was being a little selfish, saying he wants to return to the cast because he’s eager to get behind the wheel of a Formula One car once again.
Brad Pitt’s idea of the plot
When asked about the plot details of the F1 sequel, Pitt indicated “it needs to be on Joshua Pierce’s (played by Damson Idris).” According to him, the spotlight needs to be on Joshua and the rest of the team as they fight for another championship.
As for Sonny’s place in the narrative, Pitt said he isn’t certain, suggesting that he might be off at the Bonneville Salt Flats attempting to set some speed records.
Potential storylines that could shake up the F1 movie sequel
We have other possible storylines in mind, as we think Sonny Hayes might not be ready to take the backseat and give all the limelight to Joshua. After all, Sonny came back after years and was ecstatic to be on the racing tracks once more. The veteran driver comes out of his retirement for one final battle and becomes a rival of his own mentee…possible?
This direction could give the sequel a powerful narrative edge, with the story shifting toward a tense contract dispute and escalating team strategy battles. Emotional on-track clashes would be thrilling to watch, especially if Sonny’s ego and pride resurface as he reflects on his past and the memory of his gambler father from the first film. That internal struggle could either strengthen his redemption arc or push him down a darker, more complicated path, adding greater depth to the sequel’s story.
Another angle we thought could bring a new vibe to the sequel includes new F1 regulations, new power units, new cities, and new pressures. The new technical era in sports, with political power struggles, could bring the theme of survival in a changing sport. Young drivers from different continents are rising quickly, and Joshua and Sonny struggling to make their team rise to the top once again could be a new dimension that the filmmakers could explore.
When will the F1 movie sequel be released?
The first film took three years to complete. So, do not expect the next one to be completed any time soon. The team is still working on the story, and the script is yet to be finalized. Therefore, the release date for the F1 sequel has not been decided.
