Big screen comedies face declining ratings, casting doubt on the genre’s commercial future. In this challenging landscape, Aziz Ansari steps up with his directorial debut, Good Fortune, a film praised for reigniting the classic theatrical comedy experience and commenting on modern social themes.
Our Good Fortune review argues that the film stands out by clearly critiquing the gig economy and the privileged, urging viewers to experience a comedy that blends sharp social insight with entertainment.

Plot details of Good Fortune (2025)
Good Fortune’s story follows the life of a struggling gig worker, Arj (played by Aziz Ansari himself), who is hopeless about his own life.
Keanu Reeves enters his life as an inexpert angel Gabriel, who wants to guide this “lost soul” despite his other duties of stopping people from texting and driving. Gabriel wants to do something meaningful with his life.
The head angel, Martha (Sandra Oh), warns Gabriel of the consequences, but also mentions finding a lost soul, to which Gabriel says he already did. He decides to switch his life with the wealthy venture capitalist, Jeff (Seth Rogen). However, things don’t go as planned.

Actors’ performances in Good Fortune (2025)
A drastic contrast from his character as John Wick, Keanu Reeves’ Gabriel is adorable! He is innocent, sympathetic, sensitive, emotional, and a guardian. He wants to do more for humanity, so he takes desperate measures that lead to his downfall.
His delivery was perfect, and the behavioral changes from being an angel to becoming a human were full of fun. His reactions to eating the burger and the chicken “nuggies” for the first time in his life were brilliant.
Ansari as Arj is a struggling worker who wants his life to be changed. He does not want luxuries but only his life to be “worth living”. His acting and comedic timing were wonderful, but as he is a comedian, his dialogue delivery and tone of voice were likewise.
Rogen as Jeff is an oblivious tech bro whose characterization is seen as apt by several critics. He gave a solid performance as his talent and versatility were evident from his wild and outrageous portrayal.
Palmer as Elena was good, as her character did not have many layers or complexity. Still, she managed to put herself with force, and this is what she did best- she made the audience sympathize with her character.
What do critics add to Good Fortune review?
A positive critics consensus on Rotten Tomatoes reads as:
“A promising directorial feature debut by Aziz Ansari, Good Fortune‘s socially-minded humor is given wings by Keanu Reeves‘ heavenly comedic timing.” [Source]
Most of the critics called Ansari’s directorial debut a pleasant attempt where he brought his own fun-filled touches to a serious topic of accepting life as it is and finding positivity, even if it’s not worth it.
The critics called it a “classic critique”, though the script was simple, no heavy measures to count upon. It was a reasonable balance between humour, social commentary, and solemn contemplation on one’s life circumstances.
Fans’ reaction
The general audience couldn’t stop praising Ansari’s first attempt at giving a wholesome message. The viewers want to see more of such light-hearted comedies.
They lauded the fact that an A-list star like Keanu Reeves agreed to support the debut director, though some did not approve of the struggling story, but knew that Reeves did not care about the ratings, but the message only.
Is it worth watching?
Yes, it was an emotionally delightful film where I could relate to several instances. The movie hit me hard at more than a dozen scenes, which is a major reason that Good Fortune remains one of my favorite movies of the year.
I watched a comedy movie after ages, and with Reeves in the cast, it was the reason convincing enough for me (being a die-hard fan of Reeves since The Matrix days) to not skip it. And thank God, it was a smart move!
Otherwise, I would have remained deprived of the notable life lesson that the film delivered joyfully. There are certain times in life when you don’t know you needed that light in a dark tunnel, which serves to be a true source of guidance.
This is exactly what the film did to me, and that is why it struck me deeply. Reeves has endured so much in his real life as well that his portrayal of Gabriel seemed impactful. Life has made him humble, and that is what his Gabriel so authentic and compelling.
Good Fortune is worth watching only because of the cast, but it is a reminder of the unexpected ways life teaches. It blends humor with heart, entertainment with introspection. It makes you laugh and then quietly hands you something meaningful to reflect on.
The movie has the rare ability to lift your spirits with the warmth that it radiates. At the same time, it gives emotional surprises tucked behind its comedic exterior. Overall, an enriching experience!
