The hype of One Battle After Another is real! Paul Thomas Anderson (PTA) has proven himself once again, showing what an uncanny political hysteria can do to the revolutionaries and their chaotic relationships.
With a boldly original story, One Battle is a masterful example of its genre. Here is our One Battle After Another review, which will persuade you to watch the film at least once.
One Battle After Another (2025)
Plot details of One Battle After Another (2025)
One Battle After Another is already a frontrunner for Best Picture at the upcoming Oscars 2026, as early Academy Award predictions pour in amid an intensifying award season.
The film follows the story of two revolutionaries, Bob (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) and Perfidia (played by Teyana Taylor). In order to save herself from a potential arrest in one of her missions, Perfidia accepts Colonel Lockjaw’s (Sean Penn) physical instigation.
Willa (Chase Infiniti) grows up to be a spirited and self-reliant daughter of Bob and Perfidia, knowing that her mother died a hero. Willa and Bob remain unaware of Perfidia’s truth when Lockjaw comes back to confirm Willa’s parentage.
As Willa is abducted, Bob leaves no stone unturned to find her with the help of Sensei (Benicio del Toro). She seems worn down by her emotionally drained father and is frustrated by the lies told to her by the older generation.
Willa’s dream is shattered when she discovers her mother’s radical truth, but she still manages to shun it away, deciding to carry on her parents’ mission after battling the consequences of their past.

Actors’ performances in One Battle After Another (2025)
Each character claims a distinct and commendable place in critics’ eyes. DiCaprio’s Bob, Taylor’s Perfidia, Penn’s ruthless Lockjaw, del Toro’s loyal Sensei, and Infiniti’s conflicted yet determined Willa appeared to embody the roles they were born to play.
They performed as if they were meant to be here in the film for their respective roles. It was fascinating to see Lockjaw fighting for his power and ego, which motivated him to chase Willa.
Willa, on the other hand, was thwarted yet adamant to not let go of her relationships, especially her father Bob, who wasn’t actually her biological father but did everything to protect her. It was convincing enough for her to give their relationship all.
Sensei was sweet enough to carry out Bob’s mission to reach her abducted daughter by all means, even if it meant lying to the police in their faces. Since the film had comic touches to some of the very serious situations, it was amusing to watch Sensei dancing a bit in front of the police on the road upon being caught.
And of course, Perfidia was rash, impulsive, and potent — a “true warrior”, as Lockjaw described her in front of her daughter. She managed to flee Lockjaw’s custody but abandoned her own daughter. Overall, with her fierce performance, it won’t be a surprise if she gets nominated for a supporting role.
What do critics add to One Battle After Another review?
The critics’ consensus on Rotten Tomatoes has impressive statements to declare. It says,
“An epic screwball adventure teeming with awe-inspiring action set pieces, One Battle After Another is Paul Thomas Anderson’s most entertaining film yet, while also one of his most thematically rich.” [Source]
The critics agreed that the film, coming from a high-profile director with larger-than-life characters, is a thrilling cinematic modern-day Western film that does not stop to amaze us.
With the narratives of power acquisition and political ideologies, the film captures the essence of relationships and the rawness of chaos. The cinematography is gripping, and the comedy has made it more enjoyable.
Fans’ reaction
Fans have almost the same reactions as the critics, still some of them had deeper critiques. One of them cited that the “music made it almost unwatchable”. They thought that the film glorifies political violence,” and aimed at gaining sympathy with the bombers.
Otherwise, the audience felt that the film had a great story. It is a masterpiece that deserves a theatre experience.

Is it worth watching?
Yes, yes, and yes! One Battle After Another is totally worth watching since it stands as PTA’s one of the ambitious and emotionally resonant works. His visceral storytelling resonates well with the cinematic spectacle and satire.
The film is hilarious and intense at the same time. The two most outstanding moments for me in the film were when Bob wanted to charge his phone and couldn’t, as Sensei constantly disrupted him. It was a zany sight!
The other was towards the end when Willa was trying to escape, and one of the members of the Christmas Adventurers Club chased to kill her. Right on time, Bob came to save his daughter.
The trio on the road scene caused an unbearable tension — goosebumps raced across my skin, and my legs trembled with every second. Genuinely, it is a phenomenal story of timeless resistance.
The film’s score is similar to that of 80s films, which, at certain times, matched perfectly with the scene’s intensity. But otherwise, I felt there were some scenes where there was no use of the background soundtrack. For example, the scene where Lockjaw called Willa to come closer- the scene would have been better off without any background music to keep the suspense and intrigue factor high in silence.
