Ghostface is back — but this time, he’s not the one scaring us. The Scream 7 trailer might be the franchise’s weakest scream yet.
Scream 7 trailer is out, and we feel like the thrill is wearing thin. There is no scream and only whispers. Fans are talking about the trailer, but should they be?
Plot details of Scream 7 (2026)
There is no official synopsis present for Scream 7’s story as yet. The trailer shows Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott back in the role. The Ghostface is certainly after her daughter now, which is a little personal.
From the trailer, we can infer that Prescott’s fears will be revived as Ghostface is now after her family, her daughter. She needs to face the fears all over again and put an end to the bloodshed.
Have a look at the trailer here:
Director’s vision for the film
Scream 7 was to be directed previously by Christopher Landon, but he had to exit the film as his script was no longer usable after Melissa Barrera’s exit. He called it a “dream job” but had no choice.
Now, Kevin Williamson has taken over control. It will be his first time entering the horror franchise as a director after writing the 1996 horror classic and its sequels.
Williamson was vocal about his direction for the Scream 7 story. He explained that the company wanted it to be all about Sidney. Where she is now and what her life is today is the area that the company wanted Williamson to tap into.
The director also added that he will be happy to give the audience a gun at the end of the film and help them shoot Ghostface.
Fans’ reaction to the Scream 7 trailer: Where’s the fear factor?
Scream 7 trailer feels like the engine’s sputtering. It is trying hard to stay relevant and give killer vibes, but it is definitely not!
Having watched the trailer, I noticed subtle callbacks to the original, but the tension that made the first films iconic just isn’t there. It is less impressive and underwhelming at the same time. Since Scream 7 comes from a longtime Scream writer, more is expected from him.
He should have taken notes from Final Destination reboot, Bloodlines, and should have known that horror films these days need to excite the modern generation more than just nostalgia.
The trailer is clear evidence that this film will be stuck between a reboot and a legacy sequel, without the two most prominent faces. Honestly, it looks like a warning for the franchise’s downfall rather than a verve.
Neve Campbell is back for the Scream franchise. She appeared in the first four films and the 2022 reboot. She was absent from 2023’s Scream 6 but now has returned in the upcoming installment.
Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega are obviously missing from the trailer, and fans have shown a strong reaction, more precisely, a boycott, particularly for Barrera’s absence.
As per Variety, Spyglass Media Group fired Melissa Barrera from the cast of Scream 7 two years ago, to which their spokesperson clarified,
“Spyglass’ stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form.” [Source]
The spokesperson explained that Barrera was removed from the film as her “hate speech” was unacceptable.
Fans are also not happy with the trailer as they called it ‘low-budget’, seemed ‘fan-made’, and even was devoid of the Scream franchise’s signature feel.
Comments like “Gonna nostalgia bait us right into forgetting what you did to Melissa and Jenna. We won’t forget” have been taking over the internet.
