Just before Halloween, Lionsgate planned to give its audience a treat, but things did not go as intended. The Strangers: Chapter 2 has just been released as the second part of the trilogy reboot of The Strangers, directed by Renny Harlin.
Was it the right decision from Lionsgate to omit Saw XI from its September release calendar to add The Strangers: Chapter 2? Here is our version of The Strangers Chapter 2 review to help you decide whether to dedicate one and a half hours to this film or not.
The Strangers: Chapter 2 (2025)
Plot details of The Strangers: Chapter 2 (2025)
As we have seen in the first part of the trilogy, meant to be a reboot for The Strangers franchise, Maya (played by Madelaine Petsch) and Ryan (played by Froy Gutierrez) were planning to enjoy their holiday stay at a faraway home when a girl knocked at their door.
The strange girl and her partners ruined everything for them, and Maya is seen ending up at a hospital, the lone survivor of the mayhem. This is where The Strangers 2 takes off, showing Maya at the hospital, seemingly stuck in a loop.
She tries to escape the unknown killers whose motives are still vague. Why are they after Maya? Watch the official clip here to get a better idea.
Actors’ performances in The Strangers: Chapter 2 (2025)
Petsch is the only one we see prominently in the entire second part of The Strangers reboot trilogy. She is the one running for her life from the unidentified strangers. She is completely clueless about what they want from her.
Why did they kill her lover while letting her go that easily in the first part? The reason I say “that easily” is because the ruthlessness they possessed for killing the couple was evident in part one, but wasn’t justifiable at all when we saw Maya lying in a hospital bed.
I do understand that they came back for her, but still, Maya’s character did not appear to be growing at all. She was running in the first part, and she is doing the same in the second.
She did manage to kill one of them- the Pin-Up Girl- which could mean that Maya had become stronger. Her character’s growth still remains vague.
What do critics add to The Strangers Chapter 2 review?
At the time of writing, The Strangers 2 had garnered only 47 reviews from critics, and it had a 19 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The critics’ consensus review is not available at the moment, but here is a summarized version of the critics’ thoughts on the film.
The critics were of the view that the film does not give the feel of a “film” at all. Regardless of the presence of the eerie and suspenseful pacing tactics, the film is unable to make any “memorable characters or situations”.
It was a hollow attempt, without making efforts to improve it when compared to the trilogy’s first part, which gained equally worse ratings. The critics called it “tedious”.
Fans reaction
Fans were not hesitant in declaring it “the worst movie” of 2025. With Sinners (2025), Final Destination: Bloodlines (2025), and Weapons (2025 )’s gigantic success meters touching the sky, The Strangers 2 stood as “unnecessary” for the fans.
The viewers found it a drag, and the movie made no sense for Maya to be running around. It was a good hook to have one of the antagonists’ backstories included, but overall, there was nothing much to remember.
Is it worth watching?
Not really. I didn’t feel the adrenaline rush that I felt when I saw Final Destination: Bloodlines this year, which was a franchise reboot as well. The same was expected of The Strangers: Chapter 2. Despite getting a weak critics’ score and IMDb rating for the first film, The Strangers 2 could have pushed for more.
We do know that the entire trilogy was filmed in 52 days, making the second part more or less the same as the first. There are no significant changes in the direction and the film’s stylistic cinematography.
It remains inevitable that the second part of The Strangers reboot trilogy seems identical in terms of core creativity. The story being told over the course of the entire trilogy did not change much, knowing that the director did not get time to make changes between the two parts, as they were shot in one go.
Renny Harlin clarified himself that reinventing The Strangers franchise meant taking the 2008 classic horror film as a starting point and expanding it further. The Strangers: Chapter 2 capitalizes on the “unique opportunity to dig deeper into the psyche of both the victims and the killers themselves”, as per Slash Film.
And thankfully, there was a little change in the story this time, which might add some spice for the audience until they wait for the third and last part.
Rather than developing Maya’s character and focusing more on her growth (even if it meant building an emotional connection with the viewers), the filmmakers decided to unveil one of their villains, which I felt was a good attempt.
I desperately wanted to know what these strangers were up to. Do they randomly select their targets? What are their motives? And it was exciting to see a handful of flashbacks to the Pin-Up Girl’s childhood.
Her evolution as a psychopathic killer was seeded right in her early days, when a girl in the playground stepped on her sand castle and liked the same boy whom she liked herself. We still need to know more about the Man in the Mask and Dollface.
The Strangers 2 trailer gave the impression that there are four killers in the second film, but this is not the case. Hence, we predict that the final part in the relaunch of 2008’s home invasion horror franchise might reveal more about the remaining two killers.
What we liked
- Madelaine Petsch’s performance
- Expanded killer backstory (Pin-Up Girl)
- Hints of lore and potential in the franchise
What could be better
- Lack of character growth
- Repetitive storytelling
- Weak pacing and engagement
- Poor critical and audience reception
- Unanswered questions about the killers and their motives
- No real stakes or tension
- Misplaced release strategy
