Michael Shanks’ directorial debut, Together (2025), is something new in the body horror genre, according to most critics and the general audience. However, it was different for me.
Here is our version of the Together 2025 review that will help you decide whether you should spend some bucks on its ticket or keep it out of your watchlist for now.
Together (2025)
Plot details of Together (2025)
The real-life couple, Dave Franco (playing Tim’s role in the film) and Alison Brie (playing Millie in the film), move to the countryside, leaving everything and everyone they were close to once, behind.
Their relationship is already stagnant, but they want to save it. However, their retreat to the other side of the world becomes nightmarish when they encounter a mysterious force that asks more from their bodies and flesh.

Actors’ performances in Together (2025)
Undoubtedly, Dave Franco and Alison Brie are both amazing in the film. They have portrayed their characters well, where confusion and longing for each other in desperate moments have been demonstrated clearly.
For example, Tim’s confusion at the beginning of the film when Millie proposed to him in front of all of their friends was evident. It was a matter of complication that Tim was visibly trying to hide so that Millie would not get embarrassed in front of a whole gathering.
There were other instances when Millie thoroughly wanted to be close to Tim, but Tim always ignored her. Her face openly showed signs of disappointment, but she hid them so that Tim could concentrate on his music.
Acting-wise, I have no issues. It is the story and certain connections that I have problems with.
What do critics add to Together 2025 review?
The critics’ consensus on Rotten Tomatoes approves of the film, Together, as it says,
“Given an extra sinew of authenticity by the metatextual casting of Alison Brie and Dave Franco at the top of their game, Together is a body horror that’s as emotionally sticky as it is memorably gnarly.” [Source]
The critics were excited as this modern horror classic gave next-level shivers to the cult-film status. The critics are of the view that Shanks’ debut film induced grotesque horror in every minute detail, conveying the message that codependency could be heavy, even if it means a “gory mutation”.
Fans reaction
Although the Popcornmeter score does not show shining results, people who loved the movie called it a “must-watch”. Jump scares were pretty nice, but the film was “extremely predictable,” as some of them declared. It has unique twists and turns and was a dark, sweet horror flick that everyone enjoyed, despite finding it boring at several instances.
Is it worth watching?
If you are a body horror fan, then yes. But for me, it was an uncomfortable watch. It is probably that I have liked horror stuff that has an element of “fear of the unknown,” sitting tight in my seat and waiting to see what will happen next. Watching a body horror romance, a typical genre-bending flick like Together, gave me serious chills down my spine because as soon as the credits rolled, I started doubting whether I should be hugging someone or not.
It gave me a pukish feeling that intimacy could be THIS horrific. The gnarly scenes of Tim’s arms blending into Millie’s body made me uneasy and nauseated since the film evokes existential dread.
Creepiest moments that hit hard
Some scenes were creepy as hell, especially the first one when Tim saw a horror face under his own bed covers, and the face with shining eyes sitting on the bed, watching Tim with a vicious smile on her face.
The last scene of the film, where Millie’s parents come to visit them, was shocking, as the ‘Tillie’ character (a name given to the combined figure of Tim and Millie) opened the door for them. The parents were a bit troubled by the blood outside their door, but still managed to ring the bell, which had the same cult symbol.
The mystery of Tillie in Together (2025)
However, the Shanks did not aim to provide answers with Tillie’s character at the end and left the audience guessing what it actually means. The diversity of opinion from the viewers keeps the intrigue level high in Together.
Whether it was the sheer letting go of the autonomy that both individuals did at the end and giving in to the overpowering strength of the body-blending force, or the sacrifices one has to make in love, relationship, and commitment, the film leaves us open-ended with the questions of making a new identity in the process, which seems content with a smile on his face.
The symbolism behind Tillie
The Tillie character is a digital composite of Tim and Millie. Some people call it a bold welcome of non-binary identity, neither male nor female. Others deem it a satire on love itself, as the two beings become so obsessed with each other that they lose themselves to each other.
The making of Tillie in Together (2025), not AI but old-school
Shanks opened up about his direction style once, citing it as run-and-gun guerilla filmmaking that makes use of less crew, less investment, and limited preparation. Hence, the last scene of the film was ‘technically challenging’, which was the making of Tillie.
As per Indie Wire, Shanks responded to people’s queries about whether it was AI. Shanks explained,
“As a VFX guy, as somebody that’s worked with all these teams that put in so much work, it’s so frustrating now that people look at something that looks interesting or good, and they [assume] just a computer made it. It’s like, ‘No, no, no, no, no.” [Source]
The final Tillie making was the product of makeup and “careful old school” compositions, crafted by VFX supervisor Genevieve Camilleri. They wanted a normal human being walking the street unnoticeably, and not any crazy monsters opening the door after Tim and Millie’s bodies merged.
What was that in the horrifying deep hole scene?
But my question is, what was that in the deep hole again- a disgusting transformation of another couple who came here before now merged awkwardly into one, whose face I couldn’t watch even for a split second? How did both of them not merge so well and become a beautiful new being like Tillie? Is this another vague angle that the film left us with that we will keep trying to decipher for the rest of our lives?
