Coming up with an original horror film these days is the real deal in a flood of remakes and sequels. Corin Hardy’s Whistle promised to break the streak, but it felt like we were hoping for too much.
Our Whistle 2026 review breaks down everything you need to know before deciding whether to stream it or skip it.
Plot details of Whistle (2026)
Based on a short story written by Owen Egerton, Whistle is a teen horror film whose story involves a group of inadvertent high school students. They get their hands on a cursed object called the Aztec Death Whistle.
Whistle (2026)
Whoever blows the whistle is meant to die. They die before their destined time as they summon their future deaths ahead of schedule. The friends start to investigate how the curse should be stopped when some of them start to die mysteriously.

Actors’ performances in Whistle (2026)
The only two characters who felt prominent were those played by Dafne Keen and Sophie Nélisse. However, their romantic relationship didn’t quite work for me, as I couldn’t understand its significance to the overall story. Even so, they were the only protagonists who genuinely helped move the plot forward.
Though Dafne Keen as Chrys is praised for her lead performance, serving as the “heart of the movie,” her character seemed dry to me. I understand that the role would require displaying an intense ‘Winona Ryder’ performance while navigating the curse; I didn’t find any emotional connection with her performance.
I loved Sophie Nélisse in Yellow Jackets (2021 onwards), but I didn’t find her emotive acting adding any layers of emotion to the narrative. Her mere romantic relation to Chrys did not appear compelling enough to get praise out of me.
I felt the weak script brought these two actors’ work down, who otherwise could have pulled each other up out of the chaotic abyss.
What do critics add to the Whistle 2026 review?
The critics’ consensus on Rotten Tomatoes reflects a rather mediocre reception for the film, saying,
“Whistle doesn’t blow it when it comes to milking some memorable frights from its nifty conceit, although this horror flick could’ve dared to be more original beyond its main hook.” [Source]
They are of the view that Whistle is one of Hardy’s “best horror films” as it gives a 90s horror feel and could be considered a good one-time watch. A few indicated Keen’s best acting skills, but the others were not happy with Hardy.
They believed that he treated the film as very “basic” and felt disappointed, hoping that he learns from his mistakes for future projects.
Fans’ reaction
The general audience was harsher than the critics, as evident from the Popcornmeter score. They found it to be a mix of Final Destination, Talk to Me, and Smile. Some of the angry ones called it a “waste of time” as the story was dragged and looked familiar.
Most of them were of the view that only kids from the age of 13 to 20 would like it, and the only element that was appealing to our kind was the vivid death scenes. Otherwise, the film was an easy skip.
Is it worth watching?
When the trailer was first released, I was truly intrigued by the film, especially knowing that it is directed by The Nun’s (2018) Corin Hardy. I expected mind-blowing visuals with the unnerving sound of the whistle that is meant to wreak havoc.
However, I was truly disappointed after watching the film, as it doesn’t even appear like a real movie. It feels as if no real hard work has been put into it, especially knowing that Hardy is a true fan of the teen horror genre himself. No effort is visible in putting the movie together, and no real work is reflected in the characters.
It just looks like a haphazard puzzle of pieces stitched together from slasher movies, mixed with the Scream franchise. An original idea that should have gone deeper is completely wasted. It gives Final Destination vibes but is neither scary nor suspenseful; rather, it is unintentionally funny.
Hardy initially claimed that it was specially crafted for a cinematic experience, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. It doesn’t even feel suited for a streaming experience. Considering Hardy’s impressive work on The Nun, I expected a truly horrifying vision, especially knowing his strong eye for horror.
The only thing that I liked about this formulaic horror film is the creative, gory death scenes that looked powerful with their practical effects. The scenes added a sense of realism and a real sense of dread, which was often missing from the rest of the movie. Each death sequence is staged with certain visual flair that gives the gore a more tangible and visceral quality.

- Interesting core concept
What could be better
- Weak and underdeveloped script

- Unoriginal and formulaic execution

- Lack of effort in overall crafting
- Fails to meet expectations
