Hereditary’s Milly Shapiro in Hallowarrior, directed by Ben Sottak and co-starring Shannyn Sossamon (Sinister 2), is set to headline Sottak’s upcoming post-apocalyptic Halloween horror-thriller. The production has just wrapped, and the first-look images have been released.
According to Dread Central, the movie is produced by Emmajane Hoffman alongside Sottak, launching their new production company Strange Aeons, and Gabriel Rosenstein for The Spitting Image. Sossamon and Alec Ring are serving as executive producers.
Hallowarrior marks Sottak’s feature directorial debut, which is based on his 2021 short Scavenger. He is excited about the film, as he said,
“This is a throwback to the crowd-pleasing genre films I grew up watching every Halloween. The movie is dripping with nostalgic fall atmosphere, cheer-inducing kills, and a lovable ‘final girl’ played by the brilliant Milly Shapiro. I can’t wait for this movie to enter horror fans’ annual October viewing rotation for years to come.” [Source]
Plot details of Hallowarrior
Hallowarrior follows Pumpkin (Shapiro) as the last girl of the dying Earth after a life-threatening plague hits the planet. She is the sole survivor navigating the wasteland for supplies on Halloween Eve.
Some dangerous intruders interrupt her holiday plans as a savage gang of raiders arrives at her doorstep. The gang is commanded by the intimidating Thalia (Sossamon), leaving Pumpkin outnumbered and pushed into yet another desperate struggle for survival against overwhelming odds.
Could Hereditary’s Milly Shapiro in Hallowarrior become a cult favorite?
After her breakout role in Hereditary (2018), Milly Shapiro became a well-known face of the young horror leads. Her role in Hereditary was complex, emotionally intense, and resilient, and the same furious energy is needed in her upcoming thriller, Hallowarior.
The film will mark a significant shift from the victim in horror movies to the survivor, most commonly known as the “final girl.” Recently, final girl survival movies have become a hallmark of Hollywood, with successes like the Resident Evil franchise, the Evil Dead franchise, some of the rare Final Destination films, and Zach Cregger’s latest Resident Evil reboot.
Shapiro will have the chance to transform her staple image of a creepy child, Charlie in Hereditary, to the final girl role that requires wit, weapons, and, as described by the director, a “badass” personality that signifies total empowerment in young adult horror. Since Shapiro has already demonstrated her ability to handle emotionally taxing roles, Hallowarrior will serve as a deeper step into the genre, allowing her to lead the film as a solo, central figure.

Clearly, this is her shot to break out of the shell of her child-actor image and move beyond the limitations typically attached to those early roles. Hallowarrior highlights the trend where young actors like Shapiro are given more agency to steer complex narratives with authority.
Recently, such roles have been fulfilled promisingly by Jenna Ortega, also known as Gen Z’s “scream queen” due to her role in Scream (2022/2023). Sadie Sink is one of the finest young horror stars, recognized for her role in Stranger Things. Rachel Zegler is an emerging star who has shown her aptitude in prominent genre roles. Isabela Merced transitioned beautifully from child roles to leading roles in action thrillers and horror films.
This marks a broader trend in horror cinema where former child actors are no longer cast solely for innocence or emotional fragility, but for their ability to carry psychologically demanding, physically intense narratives. What makes this transformation significant is how it reshapes the idea of the “final girl.” Instead of being defined only by survival, these characters now take ownership of the story itself. They are no longer performing child roles of the classic horror victims, but like to fight back.
When is Hallowarrior releasing?
Shudder has acquired the distribution rights of Hallowarrior. The film will have its world premiere at the Tribeca Festival on June 10, 2026, first, followed by a streaming release date on Shudder in the fall of 2026. Since the film is a Halloween thriller, it is likely to be released around the said season.
