Heart of the Beast Has a Revenant-Like Survival Story—But With One Major Difference

David Eyer is known for crime-drama thrillers, war, and gritty action films that have grounded characters rather than polished or glamorous heroes. He likes to immerse the audience in harsh environments where his characters face brutal life realities.

The same is expected from Brad Pitt’s Heart of the Beast, which is set for release this fall by Paramount, as per World of Reel. The film has been reportedly tested multiple times in the past few months.

Written by the newcomer Cameron Alexander and co-produced by Damien Chazelle, this is going to be the next Ayer film that Pitt will be featured in, as he has done previously in 2014’s Fury

Plot details of Heart of the Beast (2026)

The official synopsis of the film states that Brad Pitt is an ex-soldier who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). He suffers from a heart attack while flying a plane, and the plane ultimately crashes with his dog.

The rest of the story is about his survival through the wilderness and getting to the mainland, with only he and his dog on the screen for the majority of the film. Watch the trailer here:

Could Heart of the Beast become Brad Pitt’s next critical hit?

According to several reports, the movie might not seem like anything spectacular and is only a mere survival thriller, but it carries strong performances from Pitt and the dog. Just like Good Boy (2025), which tells a supernatural horror story from the perspective of and is lauded for the acclaimed lead performance by the untrained canine actor, Indy, the dog stands out as the crucial character rather than a sidekick in Heart of the Beast

However, since it is a survival thriller where the protagonists have to make it out alive from the unforgiving wilderness settings, Heart of the Beast draws comparisons with Leonardo DiCaprio’s The Revenant (2015), for which he won the Best Actor Oscar. Still, Heart of the Beast has one major difference that sets it apart from The Revenant: companionship.

The Revenant was fundamentally the story of isolation, whereas Heart of the Beast shows the bond between a former Special Forces soldier and his combat dog. Pitt is also suffering from PTSD, whereas DiCaprio’s character wasn’t suffering from any condition. Indeed, both men are fighting against nature; Heart of the Beast presents a partnership forged through trust and survival.

One of Ayer’s favorite themes is the bond between people, even if it is between police officers, criminals, soldiers, or a man and his dog. Both characters here would be survivors who have endured their own traumatic experiences. Both rely on each other for survival through the inhospitable region of Alaska. In this sense, Heart of the Beast could be more emotional, as their intimate relationship will likely carry much of the narrative weight.

In 2026 alone, Brad Pitt is headlining two very different projects: Heart of the Beast and the star-studded The Adventures of Cliff Booth, coming in November 2026. The latter is a continuation of the character that won him an Oscar in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019). Assuming both the films meet the Academy’s qualifying requirements for the 2027 Academy Awards, they could be positioned in the next awards conversations and the possible early nominations list, knowing that they are scheduled for release in the second half of 2026.

With Ayer helming the project, who has a somewhat uneven critical track record, Heart of the Beast could be his chance to return to the kind of character-driven storytelling that earned him some of the strongest reviews, such as for Fury and The Beekeeper (2024).

Heart of the Beast is hitting theaters on September 25, 2026.
