Hollywood has recently been full of artificial intelligence movies, mainly those that show AI’s wrath. Examples include M3gan (2022), Ex Machina (2014), The Terminator (1984), The Matrix (1999), and many more.
Klara and the Sun trailer brings us the story, fresh from a few, where AI could be used to make our lives easier, and artificial companions are seen transforming those stories into emotional ones.
Plot details of Klara and the Sun (2026)
Directed by Taika Waititi and based on the Nobel Prize-winning novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, the story focuses on an artificial friend (AF) (played by Jenna Ortega) who is purchased to accompany a young girl’s loneliness, as per People.
However, when she witnesses the young girl’s condition worsening, Ortega’s AF is convinced that the sun, the source of energy and power, might hold the key to saving her. Watch the trailer here:
Director’s vision for the film
Taika Waititi (The Boy & The Octopus, Interior Chinatown) is a New Zealand filmmaker who is known for blending comedy, emotion, and genre storytelling that seems playful yet heartfelt.
His directorial style encompasses exploring true human emotions engulfed in comedy. If looked at closer, the underlying focus of his stories always revolves around identity, belonging, loneliness, and grief. For instance, in Jojo Rabbit (2019), the humor exists alongside trauma rather than eradicating it.
Even in works like Thor: Ragnarok (2017), he didn’t treat the sci-fi mythological film with strict seriousness. Humor and character-driven irreverence prevailed in the Marvel universe, making gods emotionally awkward and treating cosmic events like everyday casual dealings. Gods were less divine and more humanly flawed, delivering comedic moments in as structured a storytelling approach as possible.
The innocence of not knowing the harsh realities of life is the central idea in Klara and the Sun as well. Since the novel indulges in the very idea of imaginative interpretations of the world with the childlike brain of an artificial friend, Waititi is more interested in developing this conversational dialogue in a film that is full of spontaneity and human rhythm.
Why does the sun matter so much in the Klara and the Sun trailer?
As in the novel, the sun is central to Klara’s understanding of the world. As she is a solar-charged artificial intelligence companion, she believes that the sun is the ultimate provider of energy.
She stands in the shop’s window and observes the world. It is like a new robot coming from the factory with the brain of a toddler, but it keeps growing as it lives with its human friends. They keep learning and understanding the world with literal belief, programmed perception, and emotional interpretation.
To Klara’s understanding, the sun is a source of nourishment and healing, and she comprehends it to have the ability to help sick humans recover. The sun could also be a source of spiritual enlightenment for her. Therefore, she is persuaded that the sun might help the young girl whom Klara has brought to accompany her.
Klara’s beliefs about the sun are important to explore the deeper themes of the story. Klara is not only processing data but also constructing meaning out of it. She is able to deduce cause-and-effect relationships of physical-world things, even if she does not fully understand.
It also sheds light on the artificial mind’s effort to have faith in something. It demonstrates Klara’s human-like spirituality emerging from an AI entity. It genuinely blurs the line between programmed abilities and self-generated thoughts.
