Thundercats, Powerpuff Girls and Tom & Jerry are some of the lovely childhood cartoons that we are not ready to let go of at any cost yet. And Warner Bros. Studios knows our weakness.

According to Variety, Warner Bros. is planning to make animated films under its Warner Bros. Studios label for Powerpuff Girls, Thundercats, and Tom & Jerry. The announcement was made at the currently held Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France.

Powerpuff Girls

The Powerpuff Girls cartoons first premiered on Cartoon Network, which revolved around three young girls with superpowers. They were created by Professor Utonium by combining sugar, spice, and everything nice. He accidentally spilled chemical X, which gave the girls superpowers, after which they dedicated their lives to fighting crime in the city of Townsville.

The Powerpuff Girls series premiered in 1998 and ran for six seasons, leading to Warner Bros’ film adaptation titled The Powerpuff Girls Movie (2002). Unfortunately, the film did not do well and earned only $16 million against a budget of $11 million.

Thundercats

The original series premiered on Cartoon Network and ended in 1989. The lore centers on a noble race of feline-humanoid aliens who are forced to flee their dying homeworld of Thundera. They need to defend themselves against the evil sorcerer Mumm-Ra while they crash-land on Third Earth (the future Earth).

Cartoon Network attempted to revive the series, but it was cancelled after just one season. In 2020, Thundercats Roar again endeavored to please the fans but received harsh criticism from longtime fans.

With a live-action adaptation from Adam Wingard already in the pipeline, ThunderCats is shaping up to be a major Warner Bros. investment that could help define the studio’s future. Wingard has promised that the live-action film will stay true to the classic show. It is fascinating to see which version of the beloved show Warner Bros. would take forward first and capitalize on its success or learn from its failure.

Tom & Jerry

Tom & Jerry premiered on Cartoon Network in 1992, where the famous cat-and-mouse duo constantly try to outsmart each other. They occasionally team up against external threats, such as bulldog Spike and his son Tyke or other alley cats.

Now, they are getting another animated feature written by The Invite’s (2026) scribes, Rashida Jones and Will McCormack. They told that the story would be a rom-com film taking inspiration from La La Land (2016) as the characters would be seen fighting for love.

Several Tom & Jerry films have been presented before; the last one was released in 2017, fatefully the lowest-rated on IMDb. With one of the most recognizable cartoon characters in history, the franchise has struggled to find a definitive theatrical identity in the modern era. The upcoming film might serve as a litmus test for Warner Bros. Animation Studio regarding a broader animation strategy for modern viewers.

What do ThunderCats, Powerpuff Girls, and Tom & Jerry movies mean for the future of WB Animation?

WB Animation Studio seems to be capitalizing openly on nostalgia. It wants to thrive on some of its most valuable legacy properties, hoping to transform decades-old cartoon brands into modern theatrical franchises. Their growing confidence in animation tells a whole new story, as all of these cartoons are beloved animated IPs that can still attract large audiences in theaters.

Thundercats sets itself apart from the pack since it is coming with both an animated and a live-action film. It could be the most transformative in both ways, despite having a higher risk of failure for both. If the animated feature is released before the live-action version, it needs to be strong enough to convince modern cinegoers that Thundercats is still relevant and that the upcoming live-action film is worth waiting for.

Also, taking lessons from the recent Masters of the Universe (2026), which is from the same era as that of Thundercats, sharing the themes of heroes, mythology, fantasy worlds, and larger-than-life action. Thundercats might get a blueprint of elements that could work in animated films for attracting younger audiences. Pushing forward merely with the power of nostalgia would not be enough for Warner Bros.; rather, it needs to renew the legacy brands that feel relevant and exciting, especially when people are already making comparisons between the two.
