With the awards season heating up and festivals just around the corner, the film lineups are getting heavy, and several films that were initially meant for 2026 releases are now moved to next year’s slates.

Netflix’s Here Comes the Flood is the victim of the same shuffle, and it could be a positive sign. A well-timed launch means a good thinking strategy behind the film rather than a rushed or forced release in the packed slate.

According to Variety, Here Comes the Flood started shooting in late January this year and has a tight post-production window. The pic is directed by Fernando Meirelles and produced by Simon Kinberg (Mr. & Mrs. Smith), who has also penned the script. Audrey Chon for Genre Films and Meirelles join as producers too.

Samson Mucke serves as an executive producer.

Plot details of Here Comes the Flood

The plot follows a bank guard conspiring with a master thief to steal alongside the rise and fall of the relationship with the bank teller. The con game would remain the center of the story amidst all the twists and turns of the heist game.

The film has no trailer at the moment. Here are the first-look photos:

Director’s vision for the film

The Academy Award nominee Fernando Meirelles (The Two Popes, City of God) aims to focus on a nonlinear storytelling approach rather than a standard linear plot progression. There have been several heist films previously, like Ocean’s Eleven (2001), The Italian Job (2003), and Den of Thieves (2018), but Here Comes the Flood might set the bar a little higher.

The three main actors, who could be categorized as pure action figures, strike a quiet balance between authority and the chaotic energy needed for a heist film. Their character-driven performances within the tense overlapping cons and web of secrets seem to be an interesting recipe led by Meirelles.

Since Netflix has already framed it as an “unconventional” heist story, Meirelles’s direction style would serve as a cherry on top. His breakthrough direction for City of God (2022) demonstrated an ability to tell complex stories through fragmented chronology, energetic editing, and multiple character perspectives without allowing the narrative to become completely disorienting. The film jumps through time and shifts attention between the characters, offering the audience the chance to piece together the larger story themselves.

Netflix’s Here Comes the Flood

The same improvisational instinct could be useful for Here Comes the Flood, as the character behavior would be the attention-grabber here rather than the mechanics of the robbery. The characters themselves could be the part of the puzzle, and knowing that Meirelles is comfortable moving between dramatically different tones, the tonal flexibility could work wonders with the cast combination of Washington, Pattinson, and Edgar-Jones.

Washington can provide authority and composure, while Pattinson’s recent work has highlighted the breadth of his acting range along with a willingness to play characters whose motives are considerably less predictable. Edgar-Jones, meanwhile, adds another potentially ambiguous presence, which could be expected to be constantly shifting. The director could use their personalities to generate the film’s suspense.

Cast of Netflix’s Here Comes the Flood

Denzel Washington (Out of Time, Man on Fire), Robert Pattinson (The Drama, Mickey 17), and Daisy Edgar-Jones (Twisters, Fresh) are the confirmed cast members of the film.

This would be Pattinson’s fifth film after four films already scheduled for a 2026 release, including The Drama, The Odyssey, Primetime, and Dune: Part 3
