David Ayer’s shaky critical track record gets a much-needed breath of fresh air with Heart of the Beast, his second collaboration with Brad Pitt after Fury (2014). The filmmaker returns to the familiar territory of war, survival, brotherhood, and battered men, but it paid off.
Here is our version of Heart of the Beast 2026 review that breaks down Pitt’s performance, Odin’s emotional impact, and David Ayer’s brutal survival thriller.
Plot details of Heart of the Beast (2026)
Brad Pitt portrays James, an ex-soldier who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). He suffers a heart attack while flying the plane, and the plane ultimately crashes with his military working dog.
The rest of the story is about his survival through the wilderness and getting to the mainland, with him and his dog on the screen for the majority of the film. Watch the trailer here:
Actors’ performances in Heart of the Beast (2026)
Clearly, the two obvious performances of the film are by Brad Pitt and the dog, Odin, often affectionately called Odie. Though Pitt is physically and mentally damaged and has become vulnerable to a great extent, his need for isolation, which actually brought him to the wilderness, forced him to spend an animal-like life there. He is traumatized but still wants to have a good time with his dog, who is also a battle-scarred German Shepherd, including a prosthetic leg.
Pitt convincingly plays a wounded soldier since he is not playing a survivalist but a man who has already emotionally retreated from civilization. For example, when another human approaches him at the beginning of the film, his first instinct is to run a military threat assessment rather than having a normal social interaction. His military incidents have shaped his ‘afterlife,’ where their performances are now marked by silence in most of the film.
Pitt does not need long dialogues to have a conversation with his dog. They can understand each other with a glance, a pause, a gesture, a touch, and a reaction. The scene with the bear as a threat in front of them both is evidence of almost behavioral choreography. Excellent!
Watching them both protect each other is the most heartwarming thing of the film. The dog is the emotional resonance of the entire flick, functioning as a mirror for James. It was a profoundly emotional scene at the end when Odin desperately tries to pull James toward the almost-reachable mainland, refusing to let him give up. James was bleeding heavily, but Odin chose to stay by his side. It is Odin’s finest performance, making the moment feel like a genuine emotional decision rather than a trained dog routine.
What do critics add to the Heart of the Beast 2026 review?
The critics’ consensus on Rotten Tomatoes shows positive sentiment about the film, as it reads:
“A rigorously entertaining adventure story told through a spartan script and memorable set pieces, Heart of the Beast pays rousing tribute to man’s best friend.” [Source]
Fans’ reaction
Fans are more overwhelmed than the critics, since a higher Popcornmeter rating explains it all. They found the film “amazing, soul-touching, and sad,” especially for dog lovers. Despite a sad ending, the viewers loved every bit of it as the two characters carried the film on their shoulders like pros—even the dog. It was hard for the audience to hold back tears, and the film was overall well-made and entertaining.
Is it worth watching?
Yes, it is totally worth watching if you love survival thrillers. There are survival stories like The Revenant (2015) that rely on brutal physical force and resilience, while this one has a heart attached to it: the emotional human-animal bond. Though Pitt always brings a charismatic swagger often associated with his action roles, the biggest emotional weapon is Odin, though.
David Ayer’s well-executed pieces make the story convincing. The background story of both the “fallen brothers of war” takes the intimate angles as well as the toughness to survive, making it more compelling. The falls in the water, the pack of wolves in the night, the injuries they both had to face due to the intense fight, and the dog’s sharp instinct for detecting danger keep the tension high while making their struggle feel increasingly raw and unpredictable.
Cameron Alexander is a newcomer to screenwriting, and he does a fantastic job of giving the film a strong emotional foundation. His script balances the film’s brutal survival elements with the quieter relationship between the two leads. The film turned out to be lucky for Ayer, as he had a somewhat uneven critical track record. Heart of the Beast earned him strong critic reviews, such as for Fury and The Beekeeper (2024).
