The One Thing Angel Studios Movies Do That Hollywood Stopped Doing

Angel Studios is known for its non-traditional approach to filmmaking, and that is why it has become the talk of the town lately. With its recent impressive success of The King of the Kings (2025), which grossed $83.6 million worldwide, it speaks for its own new horizons in filmmaking.

Angel Studios movies are different because they have done something that conventional Hollywood studios, which have been in business for decades, haven’t done before. Located in Provo, Utah, Angel Studios was founded by the Harmon brothers, Neal, Jeffrey, Daniel, and Jordan Harmon. With the help of their cousin Benton Crane, they set up an initially named company, VidAngel.

However, things didn’t go as planned when VidAngel started operating as a content-filtering service that let families skip over violence, language, and adult content while streaming at home. Their journey could’ve ended there when Disney and other major studios sued them for copyright infringement.

But by all conventional logic, the team put their heads together and stayed up all night before their Christmas party to rebrand it as Angel Studios in 2021. It carved out its own identity by adopting a community-driven crowdfunding model and building something entirely new.

Also, its “Pay it Forward” system lets fans purchase extra movie tickets for people who cannot afford to watch the film. It may be a small thing but has big and impactful consequences, since sharing a movie you partly own with others is a feeling that’s hard to put into words.

What is the one thing that Angel Studios movies do that Hollywood no longer does?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jeffrey Harmon explained that they started Angel Studios with a clear aim in mind: making it a “family-friendly” alternative to mainstream distributors. They wanted to make films and TV series for everyone, including kids, which Hollywood has recently stopped making. He said,

“We were just trying to build a system to create the kind of product we wanted for our families…I have six kids, and I want them to grow up with the kind of films and TV series that Hollywood just doesn’t make anymore. We created the studio to bring these films into existence.” [Source]

With 1.2 million voters from 155 countries, a number that was previously only limited to 250,000 members till late 2023, they have helped them gain a green light on their future projects. This is the audience they are looking forward to serving, and this is what they are seeking funding for.

Its ability to grow internationally is evidence of the power of its gigantic membership model that plays a central role in the company’s decision-making process. Their members have a direct voice in their future projects, which also gives them a sense of ownership.

With that, Harmon clarified that not all of Angel Studios’ movies are faith-based. The studio does include some faith-related content, but is not limited to it. An interesting category that came into the spotlight with Angel Studios’ work is movies based on true stories. The Case of Christ (2017), Brave the Dark (2023), Sound of Freedom (2023), The Blind (2023), Cabrini (2024), and Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot (2024) are some of the titles in this list.

Angel Studios has expanded its international distribution since it launched its fan-driven faith and family content into the global theatrical business, based on the international success of its recent releases. The studio does not want it to be a US-driven niche model, especially when its voters come from multiple countries. So, why shouldn’t its films reach those regions?

Besides, the owners believe there is an “underserved global demand” for value-based films that mainstream Hollywood doesn’t consistently serve. Hollywood is mainly focused on franchises, live-action remakes, and anything based on established intellectual property.

International distributors would help “amplify the light worldwide” by scaling theatrical box office beyond the US, as Harmon put it to THR. Its distributors are present in Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Asia-Pacific, who collaborate for a wider release footprint. Instead of relying on a single domestic rollout, each of them brings local market expertise, theater access, and audience relationships.

Lately, Angel Studios is looking to go public, which, with a structured international strategy, could help fund faster for the international expansion. Angel Studios verified that it closed its business combination with Southport Acquisition Corp (SPAC) to go public. Still, it has to map out opportunities since its movies have an uneven success, and the US shows the highest success ratio region-wise.
