DC just opened the door to something truly disturbing. The first Clayface teaser has dropped—and it’s already turning heads for all the right reasons. After months of speculation, the project is starting to look like a bold new step for DC’s darker storytelling.

James Gunn had long hinted at bringing an untold origin of a classic DC villain to the big screen, and now that vision is taking shape. As per The Hollywood Reporter, the body horror film is based on a script by Mike Flanagan (Doctor Sleep), along with Hossein Amini. James Gunn found it “one of the best scripts that he’s ever read.” Before that, Gunn had no plans of making a live-action Clayface movie ever.

Clayface is considered a part of the DC universe rather than its own self-contained world. It will be an origin story of a Batman villain whose story has never been told before. DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran explained it as,

Clayface might not be as widely known as The Penguin or The Joker, but we really feel that his story is equally resonant, compelling, and in many ways, more terrifying than one of those.” [Source]

James Gunn says the movie will lean heavily into psychological terror, with plenty of disturbing body horror. The character was first introduced as one of Batman’s oldest foes in Detective Comics #40 (1940) by Basil Karlo. Gunn and Safran finally realized the character’s potential and decided to make it a mainstream villain in the DC-verse after the success of HBO’s The Penguin series.

Plot details of Clayface (2026)

The first plot details of Clayface had already revealed that story’s direction. The Welsh actor Tom Rhys Harries will play Matt Hagen, a Gotham actor hoping to make it in Hollywood. He dreams of becoming one of the biggest stars of the entertainment industry, but a misfortune hits him.

His face is disfigured by a gangster, and he turns to a scientist (Naomi Ackie) as a last resort, who transforms his body into clay.

Watch the teaser here:

The teaser shows a highly disfigured character with red eyes lying in a hospital bed. This is clearly the titular character played by our hero, who beat big names like Jack O’Connell (Sinners), Leo Woodall (The White Lotus), and Tom Blyth (Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes) to win the role. Gunn and Safran decided to find lesser-known stars for the new DC franchise.

The teaser goes on to show the character wearing an eerie mask. We can also see some of the glimpses of a violent attack and his visage warping. One standout moment shows Clayface dragging a hand across his face—only for it to instantly dissolve into a smooth, faceless mass of clay.

Is the Clayface teaser the same as CinemaCon clip?

As reports from CinemaCon 2026 attendees began to surface, it became clear that the footage was the same first-look clip shown at the event. The attendees verified that a heavy focus on psychological horror and creepy body mutations was present. And as the teaser later dropped online, fans noticed the same key moments.

It is confirmed that it is not an extended trailer or alternate cut but the exact sequence used to introduce the film behind closed doors, now open to the general public. Despite studios using altered versions of the convention footage, Warner Bros. and DC Studios appear to have opted for consistency, using the same clip to build the buzz and maintain a unified first impression.

Director’s vision for the film

James Watkins is best known for Speak No Evil (2024) and The Woman in Black (2012), which show his expertise in the psychological horror genre. The vision for Clayface was already clear; Watkins had to make an R-rated body horror film with pure gruesome horror.

Seemingly drawing inspiration from The Substance (2024), the living creature of clay had to have visceral transformation elements that could easily change its form. The character’s tragedy and psychological unraveling are central to James Watkins’ vision, evident in scenes of him lying in a hospital bed, staring into the distance as he realizes his dreams have fallen apart—laying the groundwork for a grounded yet terrifying big-screen rebirth.
