Filming Begins on Caine-Led John Wick Spin-Off

It’s April, but we are not falling for any tricks. John Wick fans finally have some exciting news! 

The John Wick franchise is not showing signs of slowing down anytime soon since the success of Ana de Armas’s Ballerina, a unique addition to the Wick-verse, won hearts with its strong story and stylized action. And definitely, we loved Keanu Reeves’ cameo!

Another spin-off is in the works. The Caine-led John Wick spin-off is currently untitled, centering on Donnie Yen’s character, Caine, who we saw in John Wick 4. Donnie Yen directs the feature along with the reprisal of the role himself. 

It is one of the highly anticipated action films that is now in production. The film will pick up after the events of John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023), following Caine as he frees himself from the High Table’s control.

The untitled Caine flick was announced in May 2024. The project got delayed for a year, but now it has officially been announced to have entered the production phase. Deadline reports it will begin filming in April 2026. 

Mattson Tomlin wrote the screenplay, whose most recent credits include the upcoming Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II and another animated feature by Keanu Reeves, adapted from his very own comic book, BRZRKR.

The audience fell in love with Caine instantly, as his blindness did not mark his weakness. Yet, he came out as one of the strongest, possibly one of the deadliest characters of the franchise. With his undeniable style and unstoppable presence, it’s no surprise that he’s now earned his very own standalone spin-off within the John Wick franchise. 

What can we expect from Donnie Yen’s Caine film?

The plot details are currently under wraps, but one thing is for sure: Caine is no longer bound by the High Table’s grip. With no oppressive control, we can expect him to be ruthless, as the rules that governed him once no longer apply. 

However, with freedom comes consequences. If the power is left unchecked, it is inevitable for it to become explosive. It is speculated that Caine’s independence could make him both a target and a force to be reckoned with. It would be exciting to see how he balances his power, survival tactics, past loyalties, and the cost of finally choosing his own path intelligently.

Moreover, Caine’s story about his daughter might also serve as a key plot narrative in the spin-off. Since his motivations were deeply tied to protecting his daughter in John Wick 4, fans could expect emotional depth and continuity. It still remains uncertain how Caine’s liberation from the High Table would give a 180-degree turn to his child’s story. His struggles to escape the dangerous underworld and sacrifices to shape his present journey might be the center point of the plot. 

What’s more in the John Wick franchise?

The expansion of the John Wick franchise is not just stopping there. John Wick 5 has also been announced. Lionsgate gave a green light to the project after everyone clearly saw John Wick die at the end of John Wick 4. The director, Chad Stahelski, declared that it wouldn’t be a cash grab but a genuine continuation of the franchise, as the fans want more. He guarantees it will be different. 

The struggle to break free from the High Table has defined the John Wick franchise, as this angle is also expected to be explored in the upcoming John Wick animated prequel, where Keanu Reeves gives voice to his titular role. 

The animated film will focus on John Wick’s “impossible task,” after which Wick will have the right to leave the world of assassins and spend a life of peace and quiet with his loving wife, Helen.

When will the Caine-led John Wick spin-off be released?

No official release date has been announced for the untitled Caine spin-off. Based on the production timelines, the studio is likely targeting a release window in 2027 at the earliest, but we still await a confirmed announcement.
