Francis Lawrence Could Shape Carry Me to the Grave Film Adaptation

Christopher Golden is known to be one of the best horror-thriller writers whose book-to-film adaptations have mostly been underway. For instance, Sony’s Screen Gems is adapting his 2022 Siberian survival thriller Road of Bones, to be directed by Black Phone’s Scott Derrickson.

Up next is his Carry Me to the Grave film adaptation, for which Francis Lawrence is eyed as a director, as per Deadline. Lawrence’s next project is coming to big screens in November: The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping (2026).

Lionsgate has reserved the rights to distribution. Lawrence could be a great choice for the film adaptation, as he already has great titles under his belt, such as I Am Legend (2007), The Long Walk (2025), and all five Hunger Games movies. He seems to be an apt book-to-film director, as the majority of them gained critical and commercial success. 

Lawrence is also known for co-writing two Hellboy flicks: 2019’s Hellboy and 2024’s The Crooked Man. His experience with survival-driven tension in The Hunger Games could make him an apt choice for Carry Me to the Grave’s film adaptation, as the novel’s story is such. 

He knows what he is doing when it comes to journey-based narratives that he can masterfully turn into psychological pressure cookers. I Am Legend is the perfect example where isolation, grief, and emotional stakes were depicted intensely. The same approach is required for Carry Me to the Grave, as the leads are expected to face emotional and psychological fears, making the path more unsettling. 

The characters of this novel would need to have the highest levels of endurance, as the plot unfolds in the next section here. And talking about endurance, Lawrence’s The Long Walk is his recent work that reinforces his strength. A funeral journey with supernatural beings never going to leave him alone envelops an extreme sense of inevitability and helplessness that poses an inescapable inner torment. 

The ambiguity circling the mother’s true identity would be a great angle to explore. It might shatter the protagonist completely if he gets to know who she actually was. This could lead Lawrence to develop a darker genre of storytelling by blending mythology, spiritual horror, and explicit human emotions. 

What is the story of Carry Me to the Grave film adaptation? 

The novel’s story centers on a man who is trying to bring his mother’s dead body to her hometown for burial, but evil is hunting them on their journey. The novel narrates how her mother was called a witch in a small town where she lived. People, and even the kids, mocked her, but her son, Malcolm, tried to ignore the stories. 

Most of the woman’s family avoids her, but at the time of her death, Malcolm and his sister-in-law were at her bedside. Soon after she dies, terrible things start happening. An evil force awaits them while they are on their way to her hometown. Violence erupts, and their journey becomes deadly, which forces Malcolm to think about whether there is actually a dark part connected to his mother.

The monstrous past, the horrific past mystery, and the truth about his closest family member would all be a part of the film’s story. A son trying to fulfill his mother’s dying wish, but the devilish past forces him to stop, implies that the film version would be full of nonstop action, thrills, suspense, and horror. A mystery already surrounds the journey that is to be made with a corpse. The son’s personal quest to uncover the truth about his mother—whether she was truly a witch or not—makes for an engaging and compelling story in itself.
