Inception (2010)

Life of Pi (2012)

Directed by Ang Lee, Life of Pi is the story of two survivors of a shipwreck who transform their lives with mutual bonding through 227 days of survival. One is the 16-year-old Indian boy, Pi (portrayed by Suraj Sharma), on a drifting lifeboat in the Pacific Ocean.

The other is the fearful Bengal tiger, who cooperates with Pi to survive the legendary journey. Both of them unravel the realities of the ocean and learn to coexist in an unlikely partnership.

Gravity (2013)

Directed by Alfonso Cuaron, Gravity (2013) has gained an impressive Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score, after which it was able to bag an Oscar for best cinematography. The story revolves around two astronauts, Dr. Ryan Stone (played by Sandra Bullock) and Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney), who are stranded in Earth orbit after their shuttle’s destruction.  

The rest of the crew is dead, and only these two people are spiraling into space. Stone is able to return to Earth after Kowalski sacrifices himself, so that Stone connects with the International Space Station (ISS).

The Revenant (2015)

The visionary director, Alejandro G. Inarritu, known for his one-shot technique excellence in Oscar-winning Birdman (2014), gave us another masterpiece, The Revenant.​

The pure survival film inherits the storyline about a frontiersman, Hugh Glass (played by Leonardo DiCaprio), who is abandoned by his hunting team and left to be ruthlessly mauled by a ferocious bear.

He decides to take revenge and goes to any length to show how man versus nature can come out as the winner.

Roger Ebert reviewed it as:

The Revenant has this power. It lingers. It hangs in the back of your mind like the best classic parables of man vs. nature.” [Source]​

La La Land (2016)

La La Land (2016) is a gorgeous “falling in love” sort of picture that tells the tale of two struggling artists in Los Angeles. The film is directed by Damien Chazelle, a musical genius who attempted brilliantly to keep dreams and hopes alive.

Mia (played by Emma Stone) and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) initially have negative encounters, but together they share a passion to do something big in life.

Their mutual inspirations build a romance story that not only blossoms but inspires them both to overcome the setbacks and risks in their respective careers.

Dune (2021)

Dune is a two-part novel-to-film adaptation that is considered a gem in its genre. Frank Herbert’s novel was directed by Denis Villeneuve, a dystopian sci-fi film that narrates the story of Paul Atreides (played by Timothee Chalamet). He is the heir to the House of Atreides on the desert planet Arrakis.

The desert is the source of fierce political conflict with the opponent House Harkonnen. Paul and his mother are forced to escape the desert, where Paul faces his new destiny and encounters unique abilities.  ​

His path to becoming a legendary figure entails meeting his goals that he didn’t know would have been possible otherwise.

Oppenheimer (2023)

Oppenheimer is a biographical thriller on the life of a physicist named J. Robert Oppenheimer. Cillian Murphy won an Oscar for Best Actor for his titular role, and is now expected the same for his upcoming movie Steve (2025).

The film adopts a special direction style, the dual timelines, one which is black and white, showing Oppenheimer’s 1954 security clearance hearing, and the other is a colored one showing his life’s work on the bomb.

The feature focuses mainly on his leadership in the Manhattan Project during World War II, in the process of making an atomic bomb.

The key plot points highlight his early educational life, growing scientific responsibility, and the awe-inspiring as well as terrifying Trinity Test that tests his loyalty, impact on the world of science, along with his moral implications of scientific developments.  ​
