It is not because of the Emmy-winning actor’s return to the big screen that Peter Dinklage new movie is generating buzz. There is one particular aspect of the project that makes it an electrifying entry in the action thriller genre.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Furious director, Kenji Tanigaki, is teaming up with Peter Dinklage for his next original action feature, The Reckoner, whose script will be written by John Wick scribe Derek Kolstad.

Lionsgate acquired the rights to the film at last year’s Toronto Film Festival, whose plot is still under wraps. Avengers’ directors, Anthony and Joe Russo, collectively known as the Russo brothers, will produce the film under the label of their production company, AGBO.

Lionsgate Motion Picture Group president Erin Westerman said,

“One of the most rewarding parts of what we do is discovering filmmakers with distinctive voices, bringing their work to wider theatrical audiences and partnering with them as they take on projects of greater scale and ambition. That’s exactly what excites us about Kenji Tanigaki.” [Source

He was thrilled after having watched his recent action masterpiece, The Furious (2025), which is equally hailed by critics and the audience. The film has gained a 98% critics’ score and a 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. And with AGBO connected to the project, The Reckoner is bound to entertain an audience worldwide.

The chief creative officer at AGBO, Russo-Otstot, also had the same thoughts about Derek Kolstad and Peter Dinklage’s collaboration. He knew that the peak of the action genre that The Furious had recently touched was impossible without Kenji’s vision. The world that The Reckoner aims to build has a “genuine soul” to it, as Russo-Otstot claimed, making Kenji the perfect choice for a director to helm the project.

AGBO’s upcoming slate includes an origin prequel of the classic action franchise, Rambo, titled John Rambo. It would be directed by Jalmari Helander, with Noah Centineo playing the young version of Rambo during the Vietnam War, and is expected to hit theaters on June 4, 2027, under Lionsgate.

Other projects include Avengers: Doomsday (2026), the third film of the hit franchise Extraction, and The Whisper Man for Netflix.

Peter Dinklage new movie pairs him with the director behind The Furious

The three celebrated people in the industry are attached to a project that has already earned a reputation as one of the most highly anticipated action films. The distinct strength that each brings could shape The Reckoner into something more than a conventional action movie.

Peter Dinklage has several notable roles to his name, including Tyrion Lannister in Game of Thrones and last year’s horror comedy The Toxic Avenger. He is currently filming season 2 of Alien: Earth. His magnetic screen presence, high emotional range, and razor-sharp wit make him an attractive addition to The Reckoner.

With The Furious, Tanigaki has built his reputation as one of the industry’s premier action directors and choreographers. The practical stunt work and kinematic fight sequences that outshone others by prioritizing realism over excessive CGI demonstrate that The Reckoner is likely to feature bigger and better action spectacle. It would not be wrong to say that the action could be more grounded.

Coming from the screenplay by Derek Kolstad, the writer who created the John Wick franchise, is yet another exciting aspect of the new film. Though the storytelling is minimalistic, it is enlarged with richly imagined worlds, memorable protagonists, and emotionally driven revenge narratives. His characters speak more than any other element of the film, which naturally gives weight to the visual storytelling and action sequences.

Certainly, this does not stop our brains from envisioning a John Wick-style film where action and character building are spot on. The Reckoner might bring a protagonist whose intelligence, determination, and tactical thinking could add to the compelling story. We could expect that the film would stand out with tight pacing and excellent camera work. However, we should still wait for the trailer to get a clear first glimpse.
