Resident Evil Reboot by Zach Cregger Will Be Game-Faithful, Not Film-Inspired

Zach Cregger dominates headlines with Weapons (2025), this summer’s highest-grossing horror hit.​

He is set for his third horror project, and it is not something that you will expect. Resident Evil reboot by Zach Cregger will not break the game’s rules with a new story.

Plot details of Resident Evil (2026)

​The official synopsis of Resident Evil (2026) follows an ill-fated courier, Bryan, who has the task of delivering a package to a remote hospital. Just as the game shows, he will have to fight the mutated creatures resulting from an outbreak, which is unknown to him.

There is no official trailer present at the moment to see how Bryan will have to fight the beasts to survive the mayhem.

Director’s vision for the film​

He admits that he hasn’t watched any of the Resident Evil films before but is a big fan of the games, having played thousands of hours.

The gamer-turned-director explains that it will be set in the original game universe and will be true to the gaming experience. He knows how the pacing goes and will keep the journey the same as the original game.

He will show the protagonist going from point A to point B, meaning to get deeper into the craphole. The film will be as if you are the player and seeing the journey through the eyes of a viewer.  ​

Keeping in view the inconsistencies of the previous Resident Evil films, the avid gamer director ensures that his fresh take on the franchise reboot will be something that fans have never seen before.​

As per IGN, he said,​

“The rabid fans of the game are probably not really prepared for what I’m going to be doing. But I think the people that are fans of the games are probably going to be stoked.” [Source]​

Cregger guarantees that it will be on a much bigger scale than Barbarian (2022) and Weapons (2025). He is aware of the ongoing online speculation whether the story will be an original next or will stick to an intellectual property (IP).

He knows one thing for sure, that it has his “sense of tone” and will be thoroughly “cinematic”. It will not be a reiteration of the existing films, which seem to be taking the name of the game only and not adhering to its real essence.

He describes his approach as fun and wild, as it could be deemed similar to the energy of Evil Dead 2. Following the original game narrative is what becomes the unique identity of Cregger’s Resident Evil reboot film.

How will Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil differ from previous adaptations?

Unlike previous adaptations, this version seems to blend survival horror with character-driven dread, similar to what we saw in The Descent (2005) or 28 Days Later (2002). Given Cregger’s knack for subverting audience expectations, we might see Bryan’s journey take unexpected psychological turns. 

The original Resident Evil games had a slow, investigative pace, and it is speculated that Cregger aims to follow the same. This echoes the atmosphere of puzzle-based progression, with maximum tension in the atmosphere and sparse dialogue.

This choice suggests that Cregger wants the game fans to nod for the original game experience, where primary antagonists would not be just mindless zombies but unpredictable enemies with a variety, just like in the game. ​

Is there any casting done for the Resident Evil reboot by Zach Cregger?

Austin Abrams, who played the drug-addicted man James in Weapons, is confirmed to be the protagonist of Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil (2026). He will play Bryan, a laid-back organ courier assigned the task of making a delivery at the abandoned hospital, just like the game’s established canon and authentic lore.

Abrams was the only person who stayed with Weapons despite a new ensemble for the film being in the process. He elucidated that he wanted to do Weapons no matter what.

He loved Barbarian, and it is this experience that influenced his decision to be in Weapons. He revealed that when he first walked into the theater, he did not know who Zach Cregger was.

As soon as he came out, he knew that he needed to do a film with Cregger, and that is how he stayed, regardless of cast changes. It was the very first horror film of the director that made Abrams fall in love with his work.

Now, he is excited to play the protagonist for Cregger’s next horror film and is determined to give the best of himself for one of his favorite directors.

When is Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil releasing?​

Sony has acquired the distribution rights of Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil, which is expected to be released in 2026.
