James Gunn has established a confident and deliberate direction for DC Studios, a vision already validated by the strong performance of Superman (2025).
Next up is something straight-up fire. The Supergirl teaser has just been released, and honestly, it is insane!
Plot details of Supergirl (2026)
Based on the teaser, it’s clear that Kara Zor-El (played by Milly Alcock) is in her early 20s, forced to fight some intergalactic battles since she is on a mission on behalf of the alien girl Ruthye. She is a young girl seeking vengeance for her father’s murder.
Kara is hardened and less smitten with humanity than her famous cousin. This sheds light on her twisted fate, intense character, and existential dread with a melancholic tone depicted in the teaser. Watch her saying “Superman sees the good in people; I see the truth” in the teaser here:
Ana Nogueira’s script is based on the comic-book miniseries Supergirl: Women of Tomorrow (2022) by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, delving deep into the character’s messiness.
Director’s vision for the film
In the DC Studios reboot under James Gunn and Peter Safran’s leadership, they are aiming for a consistent output each year. Gunn targets roughly one animated and two live-action DC films per year, expanding on the transformed and expanded DC universe.
The director, Craig Gillespie, told that it will be an “anti-hero story”, as per The Hollywood Reporter. He said,
“This is really an anti-hero story. She’s got a lot of demons, a lot of baggage coming into this, which is very different from where Superman is in his life.” [Source]
Gunn was all praise for Milly Alcock, House of the Dragon star, as he found her “absolutely stunning” for the movie’s role. She is still figuring out what it means to be a hero, dealing with her own inner fights, struggling with her identity, and the morality of actions.
Therefore, the story is meant to be beyond simple black-and-white heroism and more character-focused, highlighting their emotional stakes. This approach gives the film a new narrative depth that modern audiences may not have realized they were longing for.
The Gen-Z Woman of Tomorrow

Gunn corroborated the fact that female superheroes are burdened with an unseen responsibility of looking “perfect,” but Supergirl is not. She is messed up and allowed to be free in all possible ways, just like the male superheroes.
Even the tagline “Truth, Justice, Whatever” instantly gives Gen-Z vibes, as they are carefree and casual. They like flawed characters, dwelling on the fact that nobody is perfect, nobody has to be.
This broader cultural shift, driven by Gen-Z’s appreciation for authentic and complex characters, is reflected in the films, enabling the female heroes in the DC world to be as imperfect as possible.
She comes from a destroyed planet with a less hopeful outlook, just like the modern generation who have grown up amidst various global crises and systemic issues, favoring innovative storytelling and subverting tropes.
Why does Supergirl’s debut film carry the title “Woman of Tomorrow,” whereas “Man of Tomorrow” is used for Superman’s sequel rather than the opening film of Gunn’s DCU?
Supergirl takes its title straight from the comic book series it is adapted from, while Superman is the DCU’s starting point, named by Gunn as “Superman: Legacy”. It sets the philosophical and emotional tone for DC’s reincarnated storytelling.
Superman’s sequel, not a direct one though, will explore Superman’s evolution into the figure the world recognizes as the “Man of Tomorrow”, giving it a feel of a more ‘earned’ title rather than a reboot opener.
In what ways might the Supergirl teaser set the tone for DC Phase One?
Gunn clarified that DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters has future projects lined up in a systematic way that further establishes its universe and characters. The confirmed films in Chapter One are listed below:
- Superman (2025)
- Supergirl (2026)
- Clayface (2026)
- Man of Tomorrow (2027)
- The Brave and the Bold (TBC)
- Swamp Thing (TBC)
- The Authority (TBC)
- Wonder Woman (TBC)
Supergirl sets the tone of DC Chapter One as a grittier, more emotionally complex, and visually diverse cinematic universe where characters are significantly shaped by trauma and moral ambiguity.
Obviously, Supergirl is messy, which is a contrasting character undertone, because Kara Zor-El was raised amid Krypton’s slow but brutal destruction, unlike her cousin Superman, who had a loving upbringing on Earth.
Since Gunn has previously explained that his team will be focused on more quality and character-driven stories rather than “grandiose mega-narrative”, this is why he considers Supergirl’s story the best script.
She is tougher, showing a ‘punk rock’ version as the teaser also used a line from the comic: “Krypton did not die in a day…The Gods aren’t that kind”. It emphasizes that DC Phase One will explore the darker, more human sides of its gods.
In the original comics, too, she witnessed the destruction firsthand, including the loss of her entire family, friends, and culture. This led to grief, guilt, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Consequently, she was angry and impulsive. She has been shown to party with minimum responsibilities and even use alco_hol to deal with her depression, aligning with the “anti-hero” description used by the filmmakers of the DC universe.
