Sydney Sweeney Sleepy Hollow Adaptation Brings a Steamy Romantic Thriller Twist to the Gothic Classic

The Sleepy Hollow legend has earned countless adaptations over the past several years, and the audience still cannot get over it. Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow film (1999), which had Johnny Depp as Constable Ichabod Crane and Christina Ricci as Katrina Van Tassel, is still seared into our memories with its award-winning art direction.

The headless horseman is preparing for a comeback in Sydney Sweeney Sleepy Hollow adaptation. First penned in 1920 by an American author, Washington Irving, in the short story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” the iconic ghost story was fused with local folklore, making people still debate whether the decapitated horseman was truly supernatural or a clever prank.

According to Bloody Disgusting, the filmmaker and writer Lindsey Anderson Beer’s upcoming debut novel, “Hollow,” is about to get a film adaptation that has a new take on “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” Sydney Sweeney (The Housemaid) is already on board to play the central role of Katrina Van Tassel.

Lindsey Beer is best known for directing Pet Sematary: Bloodlines (2023) and for her contributions to the Transformers franchise. She has sold her novel to Putnam, an imprint of Penguin Random House, which is already in action for a film adaptation.

The novel instantly created industry buzz due to high competition, and the market release has therefore been put on hold. The novel was put forward for film adaptation, with publication having tentative plans to debut in Fall 2027.

Sweeney will also serve as the producer of the film under her newly launched production company, Honey Trap. Kaylee McGregor is her long-time collaborator, who is also attached to the project as president of production and development.​

The company is looking for a first-look deal with Sony Pictures. The film’s full package includes other interested studios like LuckyChap, the studio behind Barbie (2023).

Other cast members of the film are not confirmed, with no official announcement of the release date, as the distributor is not identified.

The story would be written from the perspective of the lead female, as it is aimed to be a bold, seductive supernatural love triangle. Sources indicate that Van Tassel is regarded as a romantic prize in the film and also serves as a dangerous and mysterious figure.

The main story is about Ichabod Crane, who gets infatuated with Katrina Van Tassel, the daughter of a well-off farmer, as he moves to a rural area near Tarrytown in 1790. The blend of gothic atmosphere and supernatural elements is best suited for this erotic thriller, which offers a high-concept to change the entire narrative of a classic tale. Here, Sydney Sweeney’s character would have a strong feminine voice as this modern retelling revolves mainly around her.

Sydney Sweeney has cultivated a reputation as one of the most sensual and amorous leading ladies in Hollywood. Projects like Euphoria (2019-), Anyone But You (2023), and The Housemaid (2025) have led her to blend sexuality, vulnerability, and psychological complexity, which are all the apt elements needed for her role in the upcoming film.
