Paul Feig is primarily known for comedy-drama films, but with The Housemaid (2025), he stepped into the psychological thriller genre with confidence. The film did well with the reviews and is considered a decent book-to-film adaptation.
However, this time, he wants to try a new genre: horror. Paul Feig’s Detention is his entry into the world of terrors, which will be backed by Blumhouse Atomic Monster and Platinum Dunes, as per Empire Online. Steven Schneider, Bea Sequeira, and Daniel Gold are executive producers. Brad Fuller wrote the script and brought Feig on board to helm.
Blumhouse Atomic Monster’s upcoming slate includes Ian Tuason’s Paranormal Activity 8, Soulm8ate, and Curry Barker’s third feature, which is still undisclosed. Michael Bay’s Platinum Dune is lining up its projects, which include David Lowery’s The Fisherman, It Had To Be You, and Sponsor.
The plot details are still under wraps, and no studio is attached to the project yet. However, Universal Pictures seems to be the prime choice given its relationship with Blumhouse. No cast announcements have been made yet.
The film has already gained buzz due to Feig’s horror debut, but as he is busy wrapping up the production of The Housemaid’s sequel, The Housemaid’s Secret, for Lionsgate, hopes are high for his first horror effort.
What is the real reason for Paul Feig’s Detention and Blumhouse collaboration?
With titles like Bridesmaids (2011), The Heat (2013), Spy (2015), Ghostbusters (2016), and A Simple Favor (2018 and 2025) movies, Feig is always known for his light-hearted films and could have been considered inaccurate to describe him as “a horror director” two years ago.
This changed with The Housemaid, as he is exploring the darker side of stories that he successfully brought to the big screen last year. With that history, Detention becomes more intriguing as it creates a natural wonder: what happens when a filmmaker known for making audiences laugh tries to make them uncomfortable?
There have been similar examples of directors who moved from comedy to horror, and the results were mind-blowing. Jordan Peele was most well-known for being one of the comedy duo Key & Peele before giving the blockbuster film Get Out (2017). Similarly, Curry Barker was known for his comedic work on YouTube before he shattered box office records with the 2026 horror hit, Obsession. Zach Cregger joins the list with Barbarian (2022) and Weapons (2025), before which his sketch comedy group The Whitest Kids U’ Know (2007-2011) was considered a cult TV show.
This unexpected genre shift could work wonders for Paul Feig too, as the genre experiment that set him apart from someone whose creative identity was built somewhere else and links him to the attention-grabbing pivot like Detention. Though his inclination towards darker material has been teased here and there before, such as A Simple Favor, which is mainly a comedy-drama film but leans into darker themes as well.
And the collaboration with Blumhouse makes it even more interesting since the production house has built its reputation around giving filmmakers room to create original genre films with strong concepts. One of the strongest horror brands of Hollywood has often shown consistency in providing credibility and has a long track record of producing profitable hits.

Aligning well with Feig’s recent career trajectory, Blumhouse knows how to market original horror. Detention is at the right horror platform where the studio’s success speaks for itself, such as Get Out, The Invisible Man (2020), and M3gan (2022). The mystery and premise of Detention’s plot already present a strong hook for the project’s promotion, giving Blumhouse a pre-established edge for marketing Detention.
This works strongly in Feig’s favor, as partnering with Blumhouse gives Detention an immediate marketing advantage. This is the real reason that the film’s carefully guarded details become a major promotional asset. Now we have to see how the filmmaker, known for making audiences laugh, will make the audience afraid.
