After the 2010’s effects-driven film, Tron: Legacy, Joachim Ronning is taking control to reboot the Tron franchise fifteen years later. Tron: Ares is his upcoming project for which a teaser trailer was released a few weeks ago.
The Tron Ares trailer has just dropped, which shows enigmatic lightcycles and a full cinematic aura that the audience can’t resist. The new Disney movie, coming after Elio and Lilo & Stitch live-action remake, has surely created a buzz.
Plot details of Tron: Ares (2025)
Tron: Ares is a standalone sequel in the Tron franchise, and the story focuses on a highly sophisticated program named Ares (played by Jared Leto), a super-soldier by the looks of the trailer. He is sent from the digital world (the Grid). It is a unique place where the magic of games happens.
It is an Earth-based film, completely different from 2010’s Tron: Legacy, where a boy accidentally enters the world of computers in search of his father, and the rest of the film is set in the same world.
Tron: Ares gives us a peek into OUR world, where AI-infiltration is already a norm. This program is on a mission, and we expect to see a collision of the digital and physical world’s reality with a world-building based on nostalgia, computer graphics, neon, and strong visual storytelling.
Have a look at the eye-popping trailer here:
Director’s vision for the film
Joachim Ronning wanted to show Ares as a powerful program whose interaction with humanity will be a challenge. The initial encounters show the merging of the cyber and physical world, showing light cycles and digital energy infiltrating into the real world.

For this visually striking sci-fi film, the director had a vision in mind- to carry on the legacy of the Tron franchise but with a thumping evolution. The sequel will have narratives talking about artificial intelligence, characters of digital reality, machines, the real world, hackers, simulations, and human impact.
According to Indie Wire, Ronning explained that the third instalment in the franchise is a whole process of the “Holy Grail of computer graphics”. He aims to elevate the graphics game and craft it more aesthetically, giving a grittier vibe this time.
He wanted to show as if the film is seen from the eyes of a robot. He said,
“The concept was that a program is filming a program…So it’s shot by a robot.” [Source]
Ronning wanted to show a more industrial look in the film, a different approach from the previous sleek and sophisticated looks of Tron: Legacy.
The high concept of the film is to give an immersive visual that explodes with an emotional spectacle that he believes Tron films might not have done before.
How does Jeff Bridges’ return impact the Tron Ares trailer?

Jeff Bridges played the role of Kevin Flynn, a video game programmer, in 1982’s Tron. Artificial intelligence tensions are also witnessed in this part, where Flynn was forced to run his own arcade after being betrayed by a colleague.
His return is confirmed by the trailer, as we all saw; however, specific details of his role are still under wraps. His comeback will be a significant development in the franchise.
As the last part showed us, Flynn sacrificed himself for his son Sam 15 years ago. But the Grid is unpredictable in its own ways. He did not spill the beans much on how he would be coming back, but Leto’s Ares and Bridges’ Flynn will be a great crossover to look forward to.
It is predicted that Jeff Bridges might be returning to connect the dots between Tron: Legacy and Ares.
P.S. Can’t miss this important update about what our ears heard in the Tron: Ares trailer. Yes! Nine Inch Nails’ new song “As Alive You Want Me to Be” premiered on Thursday (July 17) with the trailer release of Tron: Ares.
