Martin McDonagh is known for intense character studies with strong cast members such as Colin Farrell, Sam Rockwell, and Brendan Gleeson, with an infusion of shocking violence and brilliant timing of profound melancholy.

The British-Irish filmmaker has often portrayed dark stories with absurd comedy and sharp dialogue that does not eat up the real impact of the story. His previous films, In Bruges (2008), Seven Psychopaths (2012), Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017), and the Academy Award-winning debut short film Six Shooter (2004), have given us characters that reveal themselves with their intricacies through speech rather than pronounced action.​
