Books help paint a vivid picture of imaginary content that writers like to bring to life in our minds, and if done well, the book-to-film adaptations merge the emotional depth written in every word with visual effects and acting, becoming a lifetime memory.

Movie Insiderz has compiled a list of the biggest book-to-film releases 2026, where we will see the core magic transforming into possible blockbusters.

14 biggest book-to-film releases 2026

Wuthering Heights (February 13 and 14)

Wuthering Heights is based on Emily Brontë’s novel of the same name. The adaptation is known as a loose, stylized interpretation of the story that involves Heathcliff (played by Jacob Elordi), who falls in love with Catherine Earnshaw (Margot Robbie), belonging to a wealthy family. Heathcliff’s return is marked by vengeance mixed with an intense, highly sexualized narrative, which is partially altered from the novel.

Project Hail Mary (March 20)

Project Hail Mary is adapted from the best-selling novel by Andy Weir of the same name. It highlights a science teacher, Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling), waking up on a spaceship with no memory of how he got there and what he is doing there.

He slowly gathers his thoughts and realizes that he is on a mission to save the Earth and meets another alien, Rocky (voiced and puppeteered by James Ortiz), who shares the same mission and fate.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 (May 1)

The first installment was released in 2006, which was based on Lauren Weisberger’s best-selling novel of the same name. The story was heavily inspired by Weisberger’s own time assisting Anna Wintour at Vogue.

The sequel, The Devil Wears Prada 2, will likely follow up on the happenings of the original film, making the story diverge from the novel. The nearing-retirement Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) will be seen navigating the problems with print media due to the popularity of online publications. Emily Charlton (Emily Blunt) is now a luxury executive and Priestley’s former assistant, but in a rival role. Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) will be turning to work with them.

Animal Farm (May 1)

Andy Serkis directs the animated film Animal Farm based on George Orwell’s novella. The plot involves a revolt from the animals on “Manor Farm” against their drunken human master, Mr. Jones. They plan to create a society where animals should be free and equal and, therefore, happy. The film will be a satirical allegory of revolution and power, and how a society can be morally corrupted with it.

Remarkably Bright Creatures (May 8)

Directed by Olivia Newman, the film is another book adaptation of the bestselling novel written by Shelby Van Pelt. Tova Sullivan is a 70-year-old widow who is struggling with the grief of her husband’s death and trying to solve the mystery of her son’s disappearance 30 years ago.

Marcellus is a giant Pacific octopus at an aquarium where Tova works, who helps her solve the mystery. The octopus is highly intelligent and nearing the end of his short lifespan, making the story about friendship and unconventional connections.

The Sheep Detectives (May 8)

Leonie Swann authored Three Bags Full, which is now being adapted into a film named The Sheep Detectives, helmed by Kyle Balda. The interesting plot follows a flock of sheep who find their shepherd, George Hardy (Hugh Jackman), dead one day. They use the knowledge they gained from him reading murder mysteries to solve the murder. Sheep turning into investigators and suspecting humans for the crime will take us into a complex world beyond their meadow.

Masters of the Universe (June 5)

Largely inspired by the comic book series of He-Man and his adventures, once again, we will be mesmerized by He-Man’s sword powers to fight the evil forces of Skeletor. Prince Adam will return to his home planet of Eternia and save the universe from the antagonist. Travis Knight directs the film with Nicholas Galitzine playing Prince Adam, aka He-Man, and Jared Leto as Skeletor.

The Odyssey (July 17)

This year’s one of the most anticipated films is Christopher Nolan’s rendition of The Odyssey. Based on Homer’s epic poem, the story takes us through the Greek hero, Odysseus’s (Matt Damon) decade-spanning journey home to his wife, Penelope (Anne Hathaway), and his son, Telemachus (Tom Holland).

On his way back, he will encounter dangerous mythical beings like Sirens, Circe, and Cyclops Polyphemus. And with Nolan’s larger-than-life directorial style, the visually ambitious project demands a must-watch theatrical experience.

The Dog Stars (August 28)

Peter Heller’s novel is also a film adaptation by Ridley Scott. The film stars Jacob Elordi (Frankenstein), Josh Brolin (Weapons), Margaret Qualley (How to Make a Killing), and more.

The plot zooms in on Hig (Elordi), who is a pilot surviving a post-pandemic America with his dog. An ex-Marine (Brolin) also works at a Colorado airfield. A faint radio signal is heard from afar, and Hig is ready to risk his life for the hope beyond the impossible.

Sense and Sensibility (September 11)

Georgia Oakley will have a new take on Jane Austen’s novel of the same name. It is considered more serious and intimate, according to Vogue.

The romance story will show the hardships the Dagwood sisters will have to face, both in love and financial life, after their father’s death. The cast includes Daisy Edgar-Jones, George MacKay, Esme Creed-Miles, Caitriona Balfe, Fiona Shaw, and Frank Dillane.

Practical Magic 2 (September 11)

Alice Hoffman’s first Practical Magic book has a sequel named The Book of Magic, which is now getting a film adaptation called Practical Magic 2. The story is expected to involve the generational problems of the witches with love and their dark secrets as they try to save the man Sally’s now-grown daughter loves. Will the ancestral curse be renewed, or will they be able to break it this time?

Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are returning and producing at the same time. Susanne Bier, known for Bird Box (2018) and The Perfect Couple (2024), is directing.

Verity (October 2)

As evident from the name, the film is adapted from Colleen Hoover’s one of the best thrillers. The story is about a struggling writer, Lowen Ashleigh (Sakota Johnson), who is hired by Jeremy Crawford (Josh Hartnett) to finish the book series of his disabled wife, Verity (Anne Hathaway). Lowen might be able to uncover some dark family secrets written in an unfinished manuscript that she finds at her home while she stays there.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping (November 20)

Suzanne Collins’ novel of the same name is getting a big-screen adaptation that is set 40 years after the events of the 2023 prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Sunrise on the Reaping will be the sixth film of the franchise.

The viewers will get to know the backstory of Haymitch Abernathy (Joseph Zada), who will eventually become a mentor to Katniss Everdeen (a character played by Jennifer Lawrence in the previous Hunger Games films).

Dune 3 (December 18)

The final film of the Dune series, also titled Dune: Messiah, will chronicle Paul Atreides’ journey after 17 years as Emperor, a position he ascended to in Part Two. He will be seen as devastated while struggling with a holy war and a conspiracy to destroy him. The darker and more action-packed version will have a new cast, Robert Pattinson, in a ruthless role, along with the impacts of the chaos on Chani’s children. The concluding chapter is directed by Denis Villeneuve, who is also officially selected to direct the next James Bond film (Bond 26).
