Not everyone genuinely admires critically acclaimed or universally loved movies. Many viewers voice strong opinions against popular films, while others feel pressured by society to express admiration, even if their knowledge or enjoyment of the film is limited. The social expectation to appreciate these movies, regardless of individual taste, shapes public conversation.

Movie Insiderz highlighted six movies people pretend to love, drawing from Reddit discussions where users openly admit this pretense. This list illustrates how social pressure can override personal opinion, reinforcing the theme that public admiration can mask genuine feelings.

6 movies people pretend to love

The Dark Knight (2008)

The Dark Knight became an instant hit because of the Joker, played by Heath Ledger. It was a stunning superhero movie, but people found Joker an edgy teenager who tries to be an “anarchist,” as mentioned in one of the Reddit threads. The narrative sometimes appears overly complex, and the action is mediocre. Though the dark reimagination of the comic book hero was acclaimed, it bored some of the viewers.

More people pretend to like The Dark Knight, as it was hailed as one of the groundbreaking superhero movies because of the unforgettable performance by Ledger. Criticizing it might feel like a taboo in modern cinema, which pushes them to love it whether they genuinely feel that way or not.

Sinners (2025)

Regardless of its Oscar success, Sinners makes people confused. The film’s layered narrative forces them to turn to Google and search for its deeper meaning. Some audiences might find it hard to interpret what is happening on the screen, where most of the expectations have already been shaped in their minds due to critical acclaim and initial reviews.

Because of a strong reputation, some viewers feel pressured to like it when, in reality, they personally struggle to understand it. Though the film’s ambiguity is taken as its artistic depth, this invariably intensifies the divide between those who connect with it and those who find it overly abstract.

Christopher Nolan’s Inception (2010) and Interstellar (2014)

Some of Christopher Nolan’s films, like Inception and Interstellar, are treated as symbols of “smart cinema.” I have watched Inception and still need to catch up on Interstellar; the social pressure to praise them is real. People want to appear intelligent or artistically sophisticated in online discussions, as in modern times, social media has incited them to do so.

They want to feel included in discussions that laud these films, for which they consider these films as ‘life-changing.’ However, there has been evidence that people have mentioned their stories’ confusion, including me for Inception. It was unnecessarily complicated for me, which did not justify its image of being intelligent or even positioned for those who are extremely intelligent to understand these films. It seems as if these films want to imply that they are so intelligently made that only people with high IQs are able to decipher them, hence leading people to pretend they love them already.

The Godfather (1972)

Though people have acknowledged the phenomenal acting by Al Pacino and Marlon Brando, they still feel it is wrong to consider The Godfather the “best movie ever made.” Several other movies can touch the prestige that The Godfather has earned over the years.

The Shawshank Redemption (1994), Cinema Paradiso (1988), and Seven Samurai (1954) are a few names that could easily fall into this category. Critics of the hype surrounding The Godfather argue that the cultural status this film upholds has reached a point where someone who opposes it could be regarded as unacceptable.

It is usually mistaken for offering entertainment value, although for many who are fans of this genre, they don’t even know what it’s about. Modern audiences occasionally struggle to connect with deliberate pacing and restrained narrative style, leading them to claim they love the movie to simply avoid sounding uninformed or out of touch with classic cinema.

Forrest Gump (1994)

Despite its cultural impact, sweeping score on Rotten Tomatoes, and iconic performance by Tom Hanks, Forrest Gump is considered a terrible movie on Reddit, as Gump’s character is deemed someone who takes zero initiative. People pretend to love this film as the mentally disabled man gets lucky and finds love. However, life hasn’t been very kind to him, and this is the actual reality of life.

People think that the character has zero motivation and has a weak execution, which makes the film not worthy enough to be the sixth best film ever on IMDb.

Have you ever pretended to love a popular movie just to avoid feeling left out of the conversation?
