Spider-Man Brand New Day Review: Marvel’s Most Emotional Spider-Man Yet

Tom Holland’s fourth Spidey film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026), has hit the big screens and proved a major summer blockbuster. Holland clarified beforehand that his character in Brand New Day would be a “fresh start” after Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021).

And that certainly stands true, which is explained in our Spider-Man Brand New Day review. Peter Parker is a whole new person while fulfilling his daily superhero responsibilities. 

Plot details of Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026)

Brand New Day, or Spider-Man 4 is set four years after No Way Home, when Doctor Strange saved the world from collapsing but erased Peter Parker (played by Tom Holland) from everyone’s memories, including his close friends, MJ (Zendaya) and Ned (Jacob Batalon). 

He is undergoing a mutating physical transformation while fighting a powerful telepathic villain, Jean Grey (Sadie Sink). The threat is also somehow related to Damage Control, which you can get a glimpse of in the trailer here: 

Actors’ performances in Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026)

Tom Holland portrays an isolated but mature superhero, where the rest of the characters add to his emotional journey. The emotional focus on the character is a good step taken by the filmmakers, as this time, they held back from the multiverse strategy and leaned more into character-driven storytelling. Parker is deep in his memories and longing for his friends while following the words of his Aunt May, swinging through to fight the villains. 

Sadie Sink is the next notable performer in the film, as her character is shady, menacing, powerful, yet sensitive because of her missing sister. She wants Spider-Man to stay away from her as she is on the chase for V-Max in Damage Control, who took her sister Sara long ago.  

Zendaya as MJ and Jacob Batalon as Ned were fine in their roles but did not stand out as much as Spider-Man and Jean Grey. Jean Grey is known to be the Phoenix Force, one of the Marvel’s strongest and oldest comic characters. It could be due to the latter two being more vulnerable and most heartfelt than the rest, becoming more “human” than ever. 

Mark Ruffalo as Hulk was a good addition to the story, but Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle, aka the Punisher, was excellent. His brotherly dynamic with Spider-Man was wholesome, as The Punisher: One Last Kill (2026) set him up as a dreary character but changed him into an entertaining, emotional person as his connection with Spider-Man grew. 

What do critics add to Spider-Man Brand New Day review?

The critics’ consensus of Brand New Day speaks positively about the film, as it says,

“Spinning a web of spectacular set pieces together with mature emotional stakes and Tom Holland’s soulful performance, Brand New Day is a promising reset that portends Spidey will remain sticky on the big screen for years to come.” [Source]

Fans’ reaction

The fans’ reactions have gone through the roof, which is evident by the higher Popcornmeter score than that of the critics. The near-100 percent score reveals that the audience is in love with the revitalized Spider-Man, as they believe the film has zero dull moments and the emotional side of the web-slinging hero was a perfect touch to the story. It was never about saving his sweetheart, but the stellar character development and Parker’s struggle to rediscover his identity are the film’s greatest strengths.  

Is it worth watching?

This year’s two superhero movies were released, and in a tough competition between rebooted DC Studios’ Supergirl and Marvel’s Spider-Man, obviously, the latter won. Destin Daniel Cretton’s distinctive style and emotional stakes worked well in the MCU’s much-needed groundwork that gave a kickstart to the franchise, well, sort of. 

Cretton was already famous for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021), for bringing a human side to big stories. This is exactly what worked well in Brand New Day, where Spider-Man confronts his past choices and brings the universe closer to his dreams and desires. 

The best demonstration of a physically and mentally tested Spider-Man was witnessed in his fight sequence with The Hand, where his black eyes converted him into an arachnoid being, thus telling the entire story. He admits that he is both when Jean Grey asks whether he is Peter Parker or Spider-Man. This was the peak cinema that bloomed in the phenomenal fight sequence while struggling to fight the mind-control villain, who was destroyed in her own way.  

The movie is the best superhero movie of the year, as it is different from its previous installment, No Way Home, which was a fun movie with all the cameos from the previous Spider-Men. But the multiverse thing snatched the real fun of looking into Spider-Man’s eyes and getting to know him better, which Brand New Day offers us on a plate with remarkable sincerity. With less complexity and more character and action work, the film has won my heart.

• MJ and Ned are underutilized
• Supporting characters like Hulk have brief appearances
• Ending leaves multiple threads open, especially Peter Parker shaking hands with Ned, rather than providing a complete closure
