James Gray’s ninth feature film is deemed to be the year’s best-directed movie, and the Paper Tiger teaser trailer explains why. His latest crime drama is generating instant buzz, since its brooding atmosphere, tense character dynamics, and ambitious storytelling won the hearts of the Cannes attendees.

Directed by James Gray (The Immigrant, Lost City of Z), Paper Tiger had its world premiere in competition at the Cannes Film Festival this year. The pic got a 10-minute standing ovation after its premiere; Neon acquired it ahead of the festival, which added it as a late addition to its 2026 Competition lineup.

Plot details of Paper Tiger (2026)

Set in 1986 Queens, NY, Paper Tiger focuses on two brothers, Gary (played by Adam Driver) and Isaac (Miles Teller), who become entangled in a scheme that leads them to the Russian mafia. Gary is an ex-cop while Isaac is an engineer.

The plan could upend their chances of achieving their American dream but at the likely cost of their own entire family. Scarlet Johansson plays Isaac’s wife, Hester, who has her own messiness to handle. Johansson is also starring in Ari Aster’s follow-up to Eddington, titled Scapegoat.

According to Deadline, Gary said the story is loosely based on his own family’s encounter with the Russian mafia in the 1980s in NYC.

Director’s vision for the film

James Gray is known for a restrained yet intensely emotional directing style. His focus is not only on constant action or exaggerated performances, but he prefers silence, body language, and carefully composed themes to do all the talking. Most of his films carry themes like family, ambition, loyalty, and identity, and the same is seen in Paper Tiger

The combination of visual precision and psychological tension is particularly relevant to Paper Tiger. With an American and Russian darker crime setting, the director wants to show emotional consequences with a backdrop of violence. Ordinary people suffer due to misanalysis of their own missteps.

The autobiographical connection makes Gray’s direction feel more personal and psychologically grounded. The film draws closely from his family’s experience with the Mafia. Thus, the exploration of fear, uncertainty, and emotional collapse is evident, which directs us to think of the splendid performances of the cast that made things look real.

Paper Tiger is like opening a window into a personal chapter of his life and letting the audience see someone else’s dreams and experiences by using his own cinematic lens and creative imagination. He said,

“My view of cinema is, I understand that there is a commercial context in which we all have to work. I understand that it is for, I like to say, an audience, not the audience, but for me, what makes it beautiful is that it is the clearest window into somebody else’s consciousness, somebody else’s dream.” [Source]

Paper Tiger teaser analysis

The title Paper Tiger reflects the film’s central theme of fragile illusion versus overwhelming, lethal reality. When the two brothers with tough, tiger-like exteriors come in contact with the mobster people, they appear utterly defenseless against the actual danger.

What was seemingly formidable on the surface crumbles like paper in a jiffy. The brothers are seen arguing in the trailer with some frantic car scenes, guns, and confrontations as the danger closes in. Johansson is also seen crying in the car, who would possibly be caught up in the turmoil along with the children. The family might be seen falling apart due to extreme pressure caused by the high-stakes orbit of the Russian mob.
