Keanu Reeves Has Darkness But Ryan Gosling as Ghost Rider Has One Advantage

Keanu Reeves fans have been disappointed after the announcement of Ryan Gosling as Ghost Rider in the upcoming Marvel film. The Project Hail Mary star will be seen in an exotic new role, which, according to reports, he pitched himself to the studio.  ​

As per Variety, Ryan Gosling’s new Marvel film will be directed by Shawn Levy (Deadpool and Wolverine, Free Guy) and written by Jonathan Tropper (Star Wars: Starfighter). The film is slated for a release on May 28, 2028. The announcement was made by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige on stage at the 2026 comic book convention.  ​

Feige further clarified that the studio wants to focus on quality since when the number of projects is high, the quality wears thin. He explained,​

“It was Gosling who had the vision. It was Gosling who had the pitch that won over Shawn, that had them come and pitch us this idea, which led to us on stage today.” [Source]​

Ryan Gosling as Ghost Rider: Why is he a superior choice despite Keanu Reeves fan casting?​

Back in 2022, Entertainment Weekly reported Keanu Reeves saying that Ghost Rider is his dream Marvel role that he wants to play. Previously, the role was played by Nicolas Cage in 2007 and 2011, and it is much easier to imagine Reeves riding a motorcycle, as he did in John Wick: Chapter 3 (2019), donning a leather jacket in the same film series, and kicking some serious ass just like in The Matrix (1999).​

However, one thing sets Ryan Gosling apart and proves him a better choice for Ghost Rider’s character. Gosling’s strength in portraying deep, tragic characters is more powerful than Keanu Reeves’. Though Reeves has been doing similar roles, such as the iconic John Wick, which begins with a tragedy, his own life portrays the same emotion.​

However, Gosling has a stronger track record in playing serious emotional damage beneath a controlled exterior. In films like Drive (2011), Blade Runner 2049 (2017), Lars and the Real Girl (2007), Half Nelson (2006), and First Man (2018), he portrayed men who were emotionally wounded and isolated. On the other hand, Reeves does not seem to have vast experience doing so, other than John Wick and Constantine.  ​

Since Ghost Rider is a deeply tragic supernatural antihero who, as Johnny Blaze, sold his soul to save his adoptive father from cancer, he bears the cursed burden for the devil who let his father die in the stunt later anyway. The character’s core narrative is built entirely on a Faustian bargain, unyielding guilt, and an inescapable curse that keeps him bound in damnation.​

Keanu Reeves has done a similar role in Constantine (2005), which is the very reason fans have been asking for Reeves as Ghost Rider for years. However, despite Reeves being able to make Ghost Rider feel like a legendary and unstoppable figure, Gosling could make Ghost Rider feel like a tragic human being trapped inside a monster body.​

Even fans on Reddit have been discussing who is better: Reeves or Gosling? A few of them admit that Reeves would give a “rugged” look to the character, but since Reeves is older and if the franchise needs to continue, then a younger actor like Gosling could be a better fit.

Reeves’ presence might feel like a repetition with another similar role, while Gosling could offer a fresh interpretation of Johnny Blaze. Now that Gosling himself pitched the “comic-accurate” version to the studio, Feige was convinced of his dedication to the part.  ​

Also, while Reeves is on a filming streak with his comic book film adaptation of BRZRKR, playing the lead in Tim Miller’s Shiver, voicing Hidari’s lead samurai, and possibly having a role in the upcoming Lego movie, Gosling could be a stronger contender with his availability.
