K-Pop Demon Hunters broke Rotten Tomatoes records, shot #1 globally on Netflix, and reached among the top 10 movies in almost 93 countries. How?
It may be headed to a live-action adaptation, as the director hints at a K-Pop Demon Hunters live-action remake. Fans’ sequel dreams might be met with a live-action surprise.
From animation to action, will fans be excited for a sequel or live-action? This is becoming a dilemma, probably.
Why the director hints at K‑Pop Demon Hunters live-action instead of a sequel?
According to Forbes, K-Pop Demon Hunters could be going live, says the director, Maggie Kang. Netflix, the distributor, hasn’t officially announced a sequel or a live-action remake as yet.
However, Kang explained that there was more to the story that they wanted to tell. For example, since Rumi was a part-demon, her father was a demon, while her mother was a human.
There could potentially be a sequel for their story, how they met, was there a pact between the humans and demons, or were they enemies? All of these questions could have been answered in a sequel, and that is why Kang wanted to tell more.
Kang said,
“There are different versions [of Rumi’s story],” says Kang. Ultimately, we felt like that whole part of the story didn’t need to be told here. It was a tricky thing with the story. There are so many questions that are left unanswered.” [Source]
Unanswered questions that deserve a sequel
Some of the scenes had to be cut despite the scenes answering most of these questions, but they took the story in another direction. Celeine’s background, Derpy the tiger’s mythology, and Sussie the six-eyed bird were all part of the story that needed explanation.
Derpy and Sussie are mysteries on their own. They are neither demons nor hunters. What exactly are they? These questions need answers, too. If given an opportunity for its sequel, Kang wants to delve deeper into Zoey and Mira’s backstories.
Why a live-action adaptation is a risky move?

The creative staff, crew, and actors are excited for the K-Pop Demon Hunters sequel, but Kang wants to bring more depth to the story. She has been thinking of a live-action version of the animated film.
She realizes the fact that live-action remake has its own challenges. Once the fans have seen a brilliant animated version of the original film, they are unable to accept the live-action remake, unless and until it has outdone itself.
Still, Kang loves Dean DeBlois’s recent amazing work on How to Train Your Dragon live-action remake that has surprised the world. It has done better than Disney’s live-action remake, which has been under criticism for quite a long time.
A bold mix of myth, music, and modern animation
K-Pop Demon Hunters is a fascinating amalgamation of Korean mythology with animation and K-pop, and the latter two are on the rise these days. Kang was excited to see fans wanting to know more about Korean culture, its dance, and its demon mythology.
Kang appreciated Sony Pictures Animation and the studio for having an Asian cast associated with the film, which gave them all a chance to showcase their culture.
Talking about modern animation, although the animation was flawless, the faces and emotions of the slaying K-pop girls needed to be funny. The director wanted to show the girls being “most vulnerable” when they were eating hungrily and putting tons of makeup on their faces filled with freckles and covering their eyes with bags.
Even the animation did not overdo anything to conceal these elements of reality, which made the film more relatable, and therefore, absolutely loved by the audience. It tells the world that even the big names like BTS, Blackpink, Twice, or Saja Boys are not the ‘perfect’ humans. They have their flaws, too.
Even if they are loved by the world when they are on stage, they are unapologetically free humans who can enjoy life as they want. The emotional storytelling shows a grounded celebration of flawed humans within an idol music group, sprinkled with glamor, fantasy, spectacle, sincerity, discipline, and, of course, power.
Speaking of the music, it is impossible not to be obsessed with the mesmerizing K-pop tunes. The musical theatre-like storytelling with a background of K-pop music worked like magic.
The film has induced such a fan following that its songs now enjoy a global takeover on top charts of streaming platforms. “How It’s Done”, “Soda Pop”, and “Take Down” are the three most played songs at the current time.
What does this mean for K-Pop Demon Hunters’ future?
Was releasing K-Pop Demon Hunters on Netflix a mistake made by the makers? Because after seeing the massive success of the film, if it had been a theatrical release, it would have become a blockbuster.
With the possibility of a live-action remake, the makers might think of releasing it in cinemas? Still, these are only speculations. Whether a sequel, or spin-off, or a live-action, the unresolved plot threads have opened several doors for K-Pop Demon Hunters for future investment in either of the projects.
It has created a huge fanbase, and playing around with storylines and mediums will be an interesting scope for the directors for a fresh and bold fantasy unmasking.
