When Heat (1995) was first released, it received instant praise, as evidenced by its 84% on Rotten Tomatoes and an impressive IMDb rating of 8.3. Unlike its upcoming sequel, Heat wasn’t based on a novel; it was written and directed by Michael Mann. The script was based on his own original 1979 screenplay.
31 years later, Heat 2 is now in the works, and the fans cannot contain their excitement. Mann had wanted to work on the sequel for quite a long time, as he explained,
“It’s been my intention for a long time to do the further stories of Heat. There was always a rich history or back-story about the events in these people’s lives before 1995 in Heat and projection of where their lives would take them after.” [Source]
Michael Mann was recently spotted scouting locations in Mexico, though no official production timeline has been announced.
The story of Heat 2 novel on which the sequel is based
Heat 2 is based on the 2022 novel of the same name, authored by Mann and Meg Gardiner. The book spans different years, serving as both a prequel and a sequel to the 1995 film.
The novel picks up the story right where Heat left off, with Chris Shiherlis (Van Kilmer’s character) escaping Los Angeles and later involved in a drug cartel in South America and Southeast Asia.
Another part of the story highlights Vincent Hanna on the hunt for a sadistic killer named Otis Wardell. An interesting part of the book also sheds light on how Hanna and Neil McCauley almost met before their actual face-to-face interaction in the 1995 film.
Heat 2 novel goes on to intersect stories of all the major characters as the timeline jumps to the year 2000. Their respective plots converge, leading to an intense showdown in Los Angeles. Mann calls it a “global version of Heat.”
The casting puzzle that could decide Heat 2‘s future
For years, casting rumors for Heat 2 have been circling all over the internet, but nothing was confirmed until now. Christian Bale has confirmed his involvement in the project, as per The Playlist. He would play Vincent Hanna, played by Al Pacino in the predecessor, a relentless LAPD robbery-homicide lieutenant serving as one of the two protagonists of the film.
Michael Mann verified that Hanna was based on a real-life Chicago detective who existed in the 1960s, named Chuck Adamson. The exact person collaborated with Mann later on Thief (1981) and eventually went on to become a screenwriter and producer himself.
Chuck Adamson wasn’t convinced that Neil McCauley, an ex-convict from Alcatraz and the exact character played by Robert De Niro in the original, was a reformed man after serving his 25-year sentence. Adamson began keeping an eye on him, and he was right. McCauley started to put a new crew together for more heists, many of which have been recreated in Heat.
Reports have been indicating that Leonardo DiCaprio might be cast for the role of McCaualey, but it hasn’t been officially announced yet. Austin Butler is also eyed for playing a younger version of Chris Shiherlis. His name remains one of the most frequently mentioned ones after his rising status in Elvis (2022) and Dune: Part Two (2024). Although his involvement is also doubtful, multiple sources have mentioned him in the possible cast of Heat 2.
The situation around the Heat 2 cast is fluid, with DiCaprio still not saying yes to the role previously played by De Niro. DiCaprio is also speculated to play a younger version of McCauley, but discussions expand whether he would be seen in the said role or that of Chris Shiherlis. DiCaprio’s availability is the main source of influence in signing on to either of the roles, since he is currently busy with Martin Scorsese’s What Happens at Night.
