Monsters can be both funny and heartfelt without losing their identities. After the announcement of Freddy the 13th animated-horror film, we are intrigued to know whether Hotel Transylvania 5, which is reportedly in development, will embrace the same original magic.
According to JoBlo, Sony Pictures has partnered with Amazon MGM Studios to bring back the Hotel Transylvania franchise with its upcoming fifth film, titled The Haunting of Hotel Transylvania. Sony Pictures will handle distribution in North America, while Amazon MGM Studios will handle international distribution.
The fifth installment is to be directed by Jennifer Kluska and Alan Hawkins, with Lawrence Jonas producing. Franchise creator Genndy Tartakovsky and longtime producer Michelle Murdocca will serve as executive producers.
Presidents of Sony Pictures Animation are excited by the franchise’s return, as they said,
“From the beginning, Hotel Transylvania has invited audiences into a world where monsters feel like family. These films have been a cornerstone of Sony Animation’s storytelling identity, blending a unique visual style with heartfelt, character-driven comedy. With this next installment, we’re honoring that legacy of heart and humor while delivering the unexpected surprises audiences love.” [Source]
The franchise enjoyed more than a decade of success. With the opening of Hotel Transylvania (2012), which earned $355 million worldwide, as per JoBlo, Sony Pictures Animation launched one of the most memorable monster franchises that is still loved today. Its successors also performed well at the box office, with Hotel Transylvania 2 (2015) earning $355 million and Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation (2018) earning $530 million. Transformania (2022) had to skip a theatrical release due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Plot details of Hotel Transylvania 5 (2027)
The official synopsis of Hotel Transylvania 5 reveals that Dracula is happily enjoying his retirement while his daughter, Mavis, takes the reins of the legendary monster hotel. Chaos starts to take over the hotel when unexplained happenings start taking place in the hotel, sending chills throughout the entire resort.
The mystery is to be solved by Drac Pack, calling it one of the “most spellbinding adventures yet.”
No trailer is available at the moment.
What mistakes should Hotel Transylvania 5 avoid?

Transformania (2022) brought the biggest change to the franchise, which changed the game forever. Adam Sandler did not voice Drac in Transformania, which stripped away the franchise’s signature improvisational humor. It alienated fans from his warmth and unique character charm, which became the franchise’s long-standing identity.
Transformania shifted much of the focus to Johnny and the monster-human transformation storyline. While entertaining, it left Drac reacting to events only rather than driving them. It was considered the weakest entry of the franchise.
Drac should be made an emotional center again. On a closer look at the Sony Pictures president’s statement, they mentioned honoring “heart and humor” in the “character-driven comedy,” it could be inferred that Drac’s presence as the protagonist might be restored.
Although the fifth entry’s plot synopsis turns the spotlight on Mavis, as she would now be taking over control of the hotel after Drac’s retirement, Drac might still step back in to make things right, making him the heart of the story once again. Transformania was devoid of this angle.
One of the franchise’s biggest strengths has been the family dynamics. The interactions between Dracula, Mavis, Johnny, Dennis, and the monster gang have been loved for years, but these connections took a back seat in Transformania. The new sequel needs to restore them wholeheartedly, making family chemistry the driving force again, which gave weight to each character.
When is Hotel Transylvania 5 releasing?
Sony Pictures Animation has set a theatrical release date during the Halloween season of next fall, which is October 8, 2027.
