Being a BIG Stranger Things fan, the first time I saw Joe Keery in an upcoming body horror movie, I simply loathed it. Just like the Toxic Avenger (2023), I didn’t even bother writing about it.
Now, I saw Joe Keery in Cold Storage trailer, who plays Steve Harrington in Stranger Things, I had to keep my eyes off the screen, mostly.
Plot details of Cold Storage (2026)
Cold Storage is based on David Koepp’s 2019 novel of the same name, as per Joblo. David Koepp is the writer of well-known films like the Jurassic Park franchise and Black Bag (2025).
The official synopsis of Cold Storage (2026) states that Travis or Teacake (Joe Keery) and Noami (Georgina Campbell from Barbarian), the two young employees of a self-storage company, have to face a highly infectious, mutating micro-organism.
It was once stored in a military facility whose remaining space has been sold to this self-storage company, and the lowest sublevel of the same facility contains the micro-organism, “capable of extinction-level destruction”.
The underground temperatures are rising, and the micro-organism paves its own way for escaping. If left uncontrolled, it will soon multiply drastically and destroy the world.
Liam Neeson is on a film streak with his post-Naked Gun flick. He plays Robert Quinn in Cold Storage, a Pentagon bioterror operative, following the two self-storage employees.
Saving humanity is now in the hands of two employed heroes, possibly. Watch the trailer here, if you’re ready, I mean:
Why does Joe Keery in Cold Storage trailer feel so different from his Stranger Things vibe?
Joe Keery’s persona in Cold Storage (2026) feels different from what we have seen in Stranger Things, all seasons. Of course, he will be seen in the upcoming fifth and final season of Stranger Things, premiering this November.
Not meaning to digress, but Steve Harrington in Stranger Things is more wholesome, with an ’80s high-schooler image. He initially seemed arrogant, but as the story unfolds, he is more caring and heroic.
I don’t deny his heroic role in Cold Storage (2026), as the trailer shows, the retro-B sci-fi comedy movie shows more parasitic creature horror with a fungus outbreak. We can expect some unpredictable comedic situations, too, which changes the character game for Joe Keery here.
I understand Joe Keery’s acting choices have been wide, but his role choice in Cold Storage totally wasn’t my vibe. Actually, extreme body horror movies give me the ick that I can’t even explain.
If you have read my Together movie review, I didn’t give the rating that the critics have been justifying. I liked the concept; it’s just not my thing, maybe.
Why body horror movies are becoming gross?
What’s the point of making the grossest body horror movies when we can’t even look at the screen?! I don’t prefer head-splattering body horror movies that are puke-inducing and definitely couldn’t connect.
I am more of a fan of movies like Weapons (2025) that are high on the “fear of the unknown” element. It keeps me on the edge of my seat, and I really want to keep my eyes open for the thrill of the very next millisecond.
But here I am guilty when I say I am eagerly waiting for DCU’s debut body horror film on Clayface, a prominent Batman comics villain, which we haven’t seen on screen before. Thanks to James Gunn’s rebooted DC franchise. Still, we don’t know how BAD it would be when it comes to body horror. Because seriously, I don’t want to throw up at the trailer, just like the Toxic Avenger’s trailer that has a fantastic cast with Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones).
The horror film genre is evolving and experiencing dynamic evolution. The genre-bending and insane feature concepts that incorporate diverse perspectives, explore social issues, and push the boundaries of psychological terror are on the go.
Body horror focuses on the distortion of the human body, transforming it into something grotesque. With that, I want to see my favorite heroes in action, but I won’t be able to look at the screen, since it kind of killed the mood.
If a movie like Cold Storage is so grotesque that it overshadows Joe Keery’s appeal from Stranger Things, what’s the point in watching if I can’t get past the body horror element?
