Space-themed movies are experiencing a rise, just like Mickey 17. The trend is fueled by the use of cinematic technology and the growing fascination with space exploration. Saving humanity seems to be a new genre within complex sci-fi themes.

Amazon MGM just released the first trailer of Ryan Gosling’s next adventure, which he is not ready to accept yet. Project Hail Mary sends Ryan Gosling to space to save humanity, and the trailer has created the buzz.

Plot details of Project Hail Mary (2026)

Project Hail Mary is based on the novel of the same name, written by Andy Weir, the man behind The Martian (2015). Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) is a 6th-grade science teacher who wakes up on a spaceship with no memory of how he got there, and even who he is.

He is on his own to figure out his interstellar mission meant to save Earth. He surprisingly meets an alien who has travelled light years to save his own species from some dangers of space, and tries to prevent them from facing the same fate as planet Earth.

According to The Verge, the Earth might not be the only planet with its dying star. There is another savior sent by another body in space to save its own star, too? Is he an amateur, too? Will this alien prove to be Grace’s ally?

Ryan Gosling has no expertise in such missions and doesn’t know anything about navigating these stars, and that too, all alone. It offers a comedic tone to the narrative, which shapes up to be a real treat to watch with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller directing it.

Director’s vision for the film

From the trailer, we can see that both directors want to show the deepest of human nature, where Ryan Gosling is seen making desperate attempts to save Earth from dying. The story’s core is the high existential stakes on the shoulders of one man, and this is where the genre-bending experience is presumed from the film.

The elements of science fiction, suspense, and character-driven drama are expected since sacrifice and possibly friendship with the alien might be in store for us. This could be a fresh emotional journey of humans in space, despite many others that we have previously seen, such as Moon (2009), Gravity (2013), and The Martian (2015).

Lord and Miller are known for their quirky, playful, and emotionally resonant directing style. Their films show unconventional themes, so we know that it wouldn’t be just another human-surviving-in-space kind of film. An emotional depth on various levels is foreseen.

What happens when Project Hail Mary sends Ryan Gosling to space?

Ryan Gosling was the First Man (2018), portraying the life of Neil Armstrong, the first man to step on the moon. He knows the sci-fi stuff. He is an apt choice for the role of Project Hail Mary.

Though both films’ genres are a bit different. First Man was a historical fiction, while Project Hail Mary is a sci-fi adventure. And since the directors are changed, Miller and Lord will surely bring a new character altogether with their radiant direction tactics.

Ryan Gosling was playing a hero in the first one, while the latter presents him as a total newb. He does not know how to handle such science missions since he was a mere science teacher, and handling an entire spaceship would be a hell of a task for him.

On the other hand, getting into the shows of Neil Armstrong is a different story altogether. He would have trained and have first-hand knowledge, making him a seasoned astronaut.

After watching the trailer, it’s clear that Lord and Miller are injecting humor into the high-stakes premise, and Gosling’s awkwardness in space makes it all the more engaging.
