The John Wick universe is expanding rapidly, with numerous projects underway that demonstrate the enduring appeal of Keanu Reeves in his career-defining role as John Wick. My thoughts on John Wick Spin-Off.
Although Reeves has been adept at dodging bullets and showing off his martial arts skills through The Matrix (1999), Reeves was back in a major spotlight in Chad Stahelski’s John Wick-verse that changed the Hollywood action genre in the 21st Century for good.
The John Wick universe’s expansion continues, as a new and highly original spin-off by acclaimed screenwriter Austin Everett, known for The Traveler, moves into production. This project, once featured on the Black List, is set to introduce an unexpected twist to the franchise.
P.S. What is the Black List, you may ask? Thousands of scripts are sent to production companies each year, hoping that they will be considered for real productions. The majority of the scripts don’t make it to the big screens due to market competitiveness or controversial storylines.
The first edition of Black List came out in 2005. These are the stories that are most loved but remain unproduced. Surprisingly, some of them have actually been produced later and became Oscar-winning films, such as Juno (2007), which won the Best Original Screenplay award.

So, which upcoming John Wick spin-off is set to be the boldest addition to the franchise?

Recently, Ballerina (2025) was the spin-off film that was set between the third and fourth chapters of John Wick. A miniseries streaming on Peacock, The Continental (2023), is also from the John Wick world.
An untitled John Wick animated prequel is on the way, where Reeves will be giving voiceover to his beloved character. The story revolves around an “impossible task” that Wick had to fulfill so that he could get permission from the High Table to spend the rest of his life peacefully with his love, Helen.
Not to forget, another solo adventure of Caine, the martial arts icon in the Wick-verse, played by Donnie Yen, is going to have a stand-alone film centered on Caine.

However, when we say ‘wildest’, we truly have a reason for that. A Samurai-Western mashup is expected from the writer Austin Everett, where the idea of a Western-meets-samurai movie set within the Baba Yaga franchise will be seen coming to life.
Everett has penned the script for the epic action project, but is keeping the details under wraps. As per IGN, Everett said,
“That’s probably as much as I can say.” [Source]
Also, he did not reveal whether he had met with the franchise creators and distributor, Chad Stahelski and Lionsgate, respectively, for the proceedings of film production.
What can we expect from John Wick spin-off by Austin Everett?
John Wick has changed the language of modern action films, and with each new movie, we can expect a deeper focus on the characters connected to the Wick world. The larger-than-life stories change the way we have seen the spin-off stories and characters before.

As the new characters are pulled into Wick’s universe orbit, it means that putting an end to this mesmerizing world might be impossible. However, the franchise has to deal with one challenge here.
The quality of spin-off projects needs to be as good as the Reeves’ world, so that each time we know something related to Reeves’ John Wick is coming to the screens, we are left in suspense, knowing something unique is being added.
John Wick films already thrive on the concept of a lone warrior making up against the odds, fiercely battling the antagonists, blending well with both Western action and Samurai genres. Still, the touch of assassins and killers with the presence of the mighty John Wick tantalizes our senses enough, keeping our brain cells busy to fathom any ideas how the spin-off might be.
While it’s unconfirmed, fans hope Reeves will be seen again in his black attire as John Wick [fingers crossed].
Since its debut in 2014, John Wick has been entertaining us intensely, and with every new spin-off, our hopes remain high to see Reeves once again reprising the titular role. If Reeves comes in the Western-samurai fusion, it would be visually thrilling to see him in a samurai-Western crossover.
Is this the bold new direction the John Wick universe needs—or is it straying too far? Drop your take!
