Hollywood horror is evolving and moving away from sole jump scares. More thematic storytelling and deep character arcs are the shining elements of its stories that resonate with modern audiences.
And it doesn’t come as a surprise that they want more of those stories. A new Longlegs movie is in the works, an announcement made at CinemaCon 2026, but with some changes
Osgood Perkins and Nicolas Cage are returning for the new Longlegs movie, but Neon is breaking up. According to Indie Wire, it is because the new project’s scope and budget exceeded the company’s normal parameters. Therefore, Paramount has stepped in as the official distributor of the film this time.
Longlegs (2024) was Neon’s highest-grossing movie of that year, having earned $128 million against a budget of $10 million. The film followed themes like mind manipulation and Satanic worship, fused with a crime story narrative and creepy doll props.
The story follows an FBI agent, Lee Harker (played by Maika Monroe), who is in pursuit of clues to an occult crime. She must solve the clues before the killer continues his killing spree.
What stood out most was Neon’s marketing, along with the film’s ability to keep audiences hooked without revealing the antagonist until midway through. We did see a glimpse of young Lee Harker coming face-to-face with Longlegs, the Satanic killer, but only visible from the chest down.
Nicolas Cage completely commits to the role with a gonzo performance. The cinematography worked wonders here, as this is what the director wanted; he wanted the audience to use their own imagination, provoking them to think that he is something you don’t want to see.
The film was truly weird, upsetting, but thoroughly captivating. This was a major factor in its success, leading to its next movie.
Oz Perkins’ mystery horror film became an instant talking point, and in 2025, he cemented his presence with The Monkey and Keeper. His direction style leans heavily into mood, ambiguity, and psychological unease. Even with minimal dialogue, he creates grand, haunting visuals that leave a lasting impact. The scenes are deliberately designed to make the viewer uncomfortable.
Nicolas Cage is returning as star and producer of the new Longlegs film, while Perkins will direct as well as produce it. The film has already been written by Osgood Perkins.
The plot and release date details remain concealed in a place no one is being allowed to reach. It is reported that the story is not a sequel but a standalone film located in the Longlegs universe.

Is the new Longlegs movie building the next great horror universe?
Horror movies are uniquely crafted to build interconnected franchises due to their high profitability, low production costs, and audience’s liking for the previous stories as well as their villains. Aunt Gladys has gained her well-deserved recognition, and that is why it is turning into a standalone prequel to Weapons (2025).
The same stands true for Longlegs‘ new movie, which, despite not being a sequel, has its own new story, confirming that horror villain prequels are the new in-demand territory within the entertainment industry.
However, recent developments in Hollywood have pushed the rise of interconnected horror franchises, such as Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, which exists within the same universe as Evil Dead. The director himself verified that he has left behind subtle connective threads in the film—details that are easy to miss on first viewing. Still, dedicated fans may be able to spot them and even speculate that the archaeologist professor could be linked to a distant character from Evil Dead Rise.
The new Evil Dead trilogy, which began with Evil Dead Rise, builds on the foundation established by the 2013 Evil Dead reboot. It carries on the shared continuity rooted in Sam Raimi’s original Evil Dead universe. The Mummy further expands this interconnected world, effectively broadening its scope even more.

Likewise, the new Longlegs movie will capitalize on the franchise’s stems growing in a different direction while staying true to its roots. New characters and events will preserve the tonal and thematic DNA of the original by inviting the attentive viewers to spot new subtle details, narrative links, hidden references, or thematic echoes.
The new Longlegs movie is not just another installment; it is a potential building block in a larger horror framework that Hollywood is now majorly relying on. The industry is using this technique to reward the observant viewers and stimulate their engagement, which audiences certainly enjoy. Prequels, spin-offs, and parallel stories deepen these horror universes without following a linear path.
