It Follows Sequel Gets Major Update, and Horror Fans Are Excited

David Robert Mitchell is apparently on a filming streak. He recently finished with The End of Oak Street and is now gearing up for his long-awaited sequel to one of his best horror films from the 2010s.

The 2014 It Follows sequel is in the works, titled They Follow. The original director is returning to write and direct the movie with Maika Monroe (Longlegs) reprising her role as the lead character, Jay Height, as per Deadline. 

They Follow would be co-produced by Good Fear Content. Neon’s Tom Quinn has been teasing the sequel’s news for quite some time. However, the development of the project was officially announced in 2023. Other producers include Jake Wiener and Chris Bender, David Kaplan, Erik Rommesmo, Rebecca Green, and Laura Smith.

It Follows became a standout success, which is evident from its Rotten Tomatoes critics’ score of 95%. The film was hailed as one of the best horror films of the decade and launched Monroe as a rising star in Hollywood. The film grossed around $23 million against a reported budget of a little more than a million. Given the original film’s lasting legacy and continued popularity, They Follow is already shaping up to be one of the most closely watched horror projects currently in development.

Distributed by Radius-TWC then, It Follows centered on Jay Height (played by Maika Monroe), a college student who was involved with her partner sexually. She soon realized that something followed her that made her the next target of a supernatural entity. 

The entity could take the form of random people and keep stalking her and her friends. Jay figured out the only way to get rid of this torture was to pass on the curse to someone else by having sex with them. 

They Follow is reported to take place ten years after the events of the predecessor. No other details of the plot are revealed yet. The first movie deliberately left many questions about the entity unanswered, which the sequel could finally unfold. 

The audience engaged in several online discussions, offering their own interpretations of its origins and purpose. The mystery surrounding the entity could finally be revealed in the sequel, as it takes place a decade later. Viewers might finally get to know how Jay’s life has been affected and whether she was actually successful in ditching it, or the entity wants her back. 

Cast of It Follows sequel

Maika Monroe has already been confirmed as one of the cast members. Noami Ackie (Blink Twice) is in the final talks to join the cast of They Follow. It is still not confirmed what role she would play.

The sequel arrives at a time when Monroe’s and Ackie’s careers have reached new heights. Monroe has established herself as one of the most sought-after stars through acclaimed performances in Watcher (2022), Significant Other (2022), and, of course, Longlegs (2024). 

Meanwhile, Naomi Ackie is known to be the fastest-rising talent in Hollywood. She received widespread recognition for portraying Whitney Houston in I Wanna Dance with Somebody (2022). Her character captured the late singer’s charisma and emotional depth with a fervor that earned her massive praise. Her versatility across a variety of films, such as Blink Twice (2024) and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019), has proven that she is made for blockbuster roles and can carry them with confidence.  

When is the sequel to It Follows releasing?

They Follow does not have a confirmed release date, but it is expected to hit theaters in 2027. The production is set to begin this summer, which was delayed by scheduling conflicts.
