How can a science experiment feel this human, question? Project Hail Mary surprised the critics, the audience, and me by turning equations and isolation into something warm, witty, and profoundly “amaze! amaze! amaze!”
Our version of Project Hail Mary 2026 review will help you decide whether Ryan Gosling’s solo mission and his unexpected friendship with Rocky will leave you breathless or bored.
Plot details of Project Hail Mary (2026)
The film is adapted from the bestselling novel by Andy Weir of the same name. The story is about a science teacher, Ryland Grace (played by Ryan Gosling), waking up on a spaceship with no memory of how he got there and what he is doing here.
Project Hail Mary (2026)
He is alone on the ship with the rest of his team members now dead. He slowly rediscovers his mission, which is to stop the mysterious substance causing the sun to die. He has to hurry up before the Earth dies and his fuel runs out.
However, he realizes he is not alone on this mission. Another alien named Rocky (voiced and puppeteered by James Ortiz) shares the same fate and mission.

Actors’ performances in Project Hail Mary (2026)
Ryan Gosling wholly and solely carried the entire film on his shoulders, and he was the real glue that held the film together. His unmistakable charm with real vulnerability and expendability makes him a fearless hero. It seemed as if his deeply emotional side came out of his isolation, which made his acting surprisingly intimate.
The most praised aspects of the film were his touching chemistry with the alien character, Rocky. The funny part is, Rocky doesn’t need a face to show expressions. Yet his robotic voice brings warmth and emotional resonance to the story. He is remarkably intelligent, and his gestures and problem-solving skills convey an entertaining and empathetic personality.
Sandra Huller plays Eva Stratt, a calm, composed, and strong-willed government bureaucrat who wants to save humanity at any cost. For that, she can either talk Grace into jumping onto the spaceship to collect samples from space or give him an inevitable shot to do things the hard way. She is firm yet sympathetic, which is the best thing about her.
What do critics add to the Project Hail Mary 2026 review?
The critics’ consensus on Rotten Tomatoes proves that critics are head over heels for the film, as it says,
“A visually dazzling space odyssey that’s carried along effortlessly by the gravitational pull of Ryan Gosling at his most winning, Project Hail Mary is a near-miraculous fusion of smarts and heart.” [Source]
The critics are of the view that the feature is much more than what one could expect. It has humor and emotions, filling the right pieces at the right time, stitching together something amusing that you would like to cherish for the rest of the year.
One of them called it an “uplifting adventure” with “breathtaking IMAX imagery” that perfectly launches the audience into space. Overall, they found the interstellar escapade absolutely enchanting.
Fans’ reaction
The viewers cheered for this book-to-film adaptation as they called it an “emotional ride.” It can strike the right chords, making everyone smile, laugh, and cry at the same time. Some of them even call the film and Ryan Gosling’s performance an Oscar contender.
Is it worth watching?
This is one of the best sci-fi films that I have seen in years. I can easily compare it to Wall-E (2008), as a beautiful and emotional chemistry is witnessed between two space characters, whether it is about Wall-E and Eve or a human from Earth, Grace, and Rocky from another planet, Erid.
The directors have gorgeously woven a serious subject matter into emotional layers entangled with scientific discoveries essential for human survival. The collaboration of a human and an alien, resting upon the themes of friendship, scientific problem-solving, and self-sacrifice, powerfully emphasizes the impossible beauty in space, which otherwise might not have been possible on a real planet.
Both are motivated enough to save their own planets even at the risk of their own lives, but the true beauty of friendship lies in one of the rare scenes when Rocky offers Grace to go back to his home, as he was ready to offer him fuel. The consequential hug is meant to explode your hearts with emotions right away.
The first half of the movie resembles Andy Weir’s The Martian (2015), where the man figures out how to survive in space. It is the second half of the film when things take a light and comedic turn. It was completely unexpected how a rock-like structure would have emotions and a heartfelt way of complete surrender of everything to his best friend in space.
The scene that stayed with me most is when Grace ventures outside his spaceship to retrieve a sample from Adrian, the untouched third planet orbiting Tau Ceti, as Rocky anxiously calls him back. I was choked up, watching Grace swing here and there outside the ship, and was not ready to let go of the sample. But the ship was about to explode if they spent one more minute in the star’s atmosphere.
What happened after was totally brain-busting. This is what made their bond special. Neither was ready to give up on the other. The hilarious disconnect in Rocky’s communication, but pure feelings formed a giant heart of the story. The humor in the writing was well-timed, well-developed characters had soul-deep bonds, and incredibly detailed production design, which the directors claimed contained no green or blue screens, gave depth to the film’s feel, forming a perfect formula for a perfect sci-fi film of the year.
