Anne Hathaway seems to be on an acting streak, with five of her films set for release in 2026. The Devil Wears Prada 2, Mother Mary, The Odyssey, and Verity in October are all part of her current year’s projects.

And now, added to this, is the fresh dinosaur movie. The End of Oak Street trailer depicts Hollywood going beyond the typical Jurassic dinosaur movies.

Plot details of The End of Oak Street (2026)

The official synopsis of the film indicates that Oak Street from suburbia has been ripped from its original place and transported to an unknown location where mysterious creatures are looming. The Platt family, of which Anne Hathaway is a part, has to stick together to survive, especially in unfamiliar surroundings.

Director’s vision for the film

David Robert Mitchell has a special way of introducing mystery, paranoia, and surreal elements into his films, as we have seen in It Follows (2014) and Under the Silver Lake (2018). He places ordinary characters in ordinary environments and then invites us to question what is hidden beneath such normal manifestations.

The slow-building tension casually creeps in without the viewers knowing, as he frequently emphasizes the mood even when dealing with specific genre concepts. While talking to Entertainment Weekly, he opened up about how he came up with the dreamlike sense of uncertainty related to dinosaurs appearing in a normal-looking neighborhood. He said,

“A few years ago… I was passing by this garage with a chain-link fence and garbage cans. And I was struck by the image of, like, ‘It’d be really interesting if there was a dinosaur right there.”‘ [Source]

He was excited by the idea of merging something fantastical, such as a dinosaur with a mundane trash drum and everyday locales, and he instantly started writing the script. Things took speed when Hathaway was boarded. The director acknowledged that having her on the project meant that the emotional intensity was revived, just as was the requirement of the story.

A family going through an insane dilemma is to be tested in such times, where they could make it or break it. Hathaway’s involvement adds emotional depth to an incredibly dangerous situation that affects their family dynamics.

What The End of Oak Street trailer gets right about dinosaur storytelling

From the looks of it, The End of Oak Street might appear as just another dinosaur movie. However, it is majorly different, and comments in its YouTube trailer section are calling it “fresh.” The differences between the regular Jurassic films and the Anne Hathaway starrer are substantial.

Jurassic movies center on dinosaurs in theme parks, corporate interests, scientific hubris, and containment failures. The End of Oak Street has them right within a normal neighborhood, threatening the safe living spaces that once families had.

Dinosaurs are not reborn here due to some complex genetic engineering; dinosaurs were already there when humans were transported to their land as a result of a peculiar cosmic event. The Internet has been theorizing about this as an extension of the Cloverfield franchise. The Cloverfield Paradox (2018) also came from Bad Robot production under J.J. Abrams, along with The End of Oak Street. The Cloverfield Paradox unfolds a scientific experiment causing anomalies all over time and space, which could imply the displacement of land pieces, as shown in The End of Oak Street.

The moving of Oak Street millions of years back is the new angle in the routine dinosaur movies that are unlike any Jurassic movie before. Adding to its altered tone, the film feels close to atmospheric unease, like that of Signs (2002), Poltergeist (1982), and The Twilight Zone (1983), which were taken as the reference points by the director of It Follows.

Overall, the dinosaurs do add to the dread that the movie is actually thriving upon, but the real mystery is the shifting of the entire place to another region or time, which is the actual trauma that the family has to endure. It is this distinctive hook that the film’s setting is in the 1980s, where a simple neighborhood has to go through an impossible scenario that the Jurassic franchise has never thought of.

Several films before have used dinosaurs as the creatures of fear, because, unlike unicorns, they are not the kind of beings people would welcome into their neighborhoods with hugs. 65 (2023), The Dinosaur Project (2012), and Godzilla (2014) tried different approaches but didn’t fully escape the shadow of the Jurassic Park formula despite their varying settings, tones, and storytelling styles.

Jurassic movies have infiltrated mainstream cinema for over 30 years, and the dinosaur genre seems overcrowded. People cannot help themselves relating these prehistoric creatures to Steven Spielberg’s iconic franchise, but this is where The End of Oak Street tends to separate itself from the pack.
