Why does the fear of losing a child remain one of the most powerful themes in thrillers? Robert De Niro’s The Whisper Man uses this universal fear as the central focus for Netflix’s upcoming thriller.

According to Deadline, The Whisper Man has an excellent star-studded cast and is a collaboration with the Russo brothers’ company, AGBO. Avengers: Doomsday directors Anthony and Joe Russo are on the list of producers alongside Angela Russo-Otstot, Michael Disco, and Kassee Whiting. The executive producers are Marcus Viscidi, Tim Connors, and Alex Leb.

The Whisper Man will be directed by James Ashcroft (The Rule of Jenny Pen, Coming Home in the Dark). He is mainly known for bringing small-budget horror thrillers to life, but Netflix’s The Whisper Man is the biggest project yet, with a reported budget of $50 million.

The film is written by Ben Jacoby (The First Omen) and Chase Palmer (It). The Netflix thriller would be another addition to the list of collaborations with the Russo Brothers, having built a strong relationship over time with The Gray Man (2022), The Electric State (2025), and the Extraction franchise.

AGBO described the film both as a thriller and an emotional story.

“AGBO is excited to be embarking on our sixth film with our incredible partners at Netflix. The Whisper Man is a gripping thriller, but at its core [it] is a poignant and complex story of father and sons. We are grateful to have one of the finest actors of his generation, Robert De Niro, anchoring that story and with the remarkable James Ashcroft directing.” [Source]

What is The Whisper Man (2026) about?

Based on the 2019 novel of the same name by Alex North, The Whisper Man is a psychological thriller focusing on a widowed crime writer who looks to his estranged father after the abduction of his eight-year-old son. The estranged father is a retired former police detective who finds that the abduction is related to a decade-old case of a convicted serial killer known as “The Whisper Man.”

The novel and the film tap into a parent’s worst fear: their child disappearing or being abducted. The Whisper Man is someone who stalks the kids and whispers at their bedroom windows at night to lure and kidnap them.

The book’s rave reviews indicate that the story relies heavily on a deeply internal, psychological atmosphere. The intensity surrounding the complex grief and tense father-son dynamics is detailed at length in the novel. It would be fascinating to watch whether the film catches the same imagery as pictured in the novel, which the readers have praised with all their hearts.

Cast of The Whisper Man (2026)

The cast includes Robert De Niro (Heat, The Irishman), Adam Scott (Hokum), and Michelle Monaghan (Gone Baby Gone). Robert De Niro plays the estranged father, while Adam Scott portrays the father whose child is lost.

Michelle Monaghan will be playing Detective Amanda Beck. Other cast members include Acston Luca (The Revenge of La Llorona), Will Brill (Fellow Travelers), Hamish Linklater (Midnight Mass), and Owen Teague (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes).

Mainly, Robert De Niro’s and Adam Scott’s presence in the movie has already got people talking about it. De Niro’s involvement immediately gives the film a sense of seriousness. He has spent decades playing characters in crime dramas, thrillers, and morally complicated stories. The film’s investigatory atmosphere fits well with his reputation, aiming for a more character-driven thriller.

Adam Scott has played a wide array of film roles, including comedic and horror ones. His character can feel more relatable and human, playing a father who has lost his son. An emotional connection in the story is crucial, as he is adept at playing ordinary people caught in extraordinary circumstances.

The pairing of De Niro and Scott gives a balance of experience and vulnerability. Having two recognizable actors isn’t only the secret to the film’s likely success but also their contrasting strengths.

When is Robert De Niro’s The Whisper Man releasing?

The film will hit the streaming platform, Netflix, on August 28, 2026.
