According to Bloody Disgusting, It Ends is about four recent college graduates going for a nighttime drive that turns into a deadly encounter on a road that never ends. They are attacked by strangers off and on but cannot find a way to put an end to the mind-boggling experience on the road.

They even start questioning their identities and the realities they are living. They try to make meaning of the road, whether it is real or not. They eventually settle into a routine, continuing to drive in the hope the road will finally lead somewhere.

Director’s vision for the film

It Ends is a directorial debut from Alexander Ullom, who has put one of the most prominent Gen Z fears into a film: liminal horror. Gen Z filmmakers like him have been emphasizing genre-bending existential themes that have resonated with modern audiences more than anything, such as Curry Barker’s Obsession (2026) and Kane Parson’s Backrooms (2026). 

Ullom wanted to explore uncertainty, adulthood, and the emotional state of the young generation when they are finally entering into practical life after graduation. The pic is far more than a supernatural survival story. The director seems to aim at the ambiguity hiding in the daily monotonous life that goes in a loop. 

Rather than asking, “How do we escape the road?” the film asks a more existential question: How do you keep moving when you don’t know if there is an end in sight?  

The director’s thoughts on the film are:

“I don’t really see it as a horror film. I feel like if you just take any characters and put them into a life-or-death scenario, it becomes horror because of the inflated emotions.” [Source]

It Ends trailer analysis: What is the mystery of the endless road?

The unsettling premise of being trapped on an ordinary but never-ending road is the true dread that the trailer builds through repetition, isolation, and the fear of being unable to escape. Though the road is a public highway, there is no one to be seen, none to call for help. 

The trailer never explains why this happens, encouraging viewers to develop their own theories. It could be about a supernatural curse trapping anyone who enters, a road without any turns could be a shared nightmare, a time loop that prevents escape, or a hidden experiment in another dimension. 

This is exactly what makes the trailer more fascinating, as it never reveals what lies beyond the road, keeping the true threat hidden. However, it is equally disturbing. Each repeated journey adds to the characters’ desperation. They become increasingly exhausted and paranoid after each failed attempt.  

It seems as if the road is actively manipulating the characters rather than simply trapping them. It is the same as getting up every day, having breakfast, going to work, coming back home, having dinner, and going to sleep, and repeating the same eternal routine forever without knowing what comes next.  

There is no creature lurking in the shadows, and no jump scares—it is the terrifying possibility that there is no way out. The endless road could become a symbol of hopelessness and what humans could do to survive it: whether to succumb to it or come out stronger.
