The second part of Matt Reeves’ The Batman trilogy, which introduced Robert Pattinson as the young Batman, is in hot water. The trilogy exists in “Elseworlds,” separate from James Gunn’s main DC Universe, which, due to The Batman Part II’s delay, is also hurt.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Batman Part II was moved as part of the larger shuffle, where J.J. Abrams’ sci-fi fantasy film, The Great Beyond, was rescheduled from November 13, 2026, to October 1, 2027. The film stars Glen Powell (How to Make a Killing) and Jenna Ortega (Klara and the Sun).
Other calendar date changes include Sam Esmail’s Panic Carefully, previously slated for a February 26, 2027, release and now moved to April 9, 2027. The Revenge of La Llorona is also shifted to February 26, 2027, which was previously known to hit theaters on April 9, 2027.
October 1 was the previous release date of The Batman Part II, which has now been changed to February 18, 2028. An official announcement for this delay was made with a teaser that includes the new Batman Part II’s logo.
Also, the pending Paramount’s acquisition of Warner Bros. due to antitrust lawsuits is causing trouble for the entire release calendar. This includes chaos for the DCU as well, since James Gunn’s The Brave and the Bold will be affected by the delayed release of The Batman Part II.
The Batman Part II’s delay: What does it mean for DC’s future?
With the fourth delay in the release of The Batman Part II, the desire for another Batman movie is only getting stronger. Batman is DC’s biggest money-maker hero, and postponing the most financially valuable character, either Gunn’s or Reeves’, appears to be a strategic mistake by Warner Bros.
It should be understood that it is not Reeves’, Abrams’, or Gunn’s fault that the film is constantly being pushed further. The script of the film isn’t a problem either. It is Warner Bros.’ shuffling of the upcoming movie slate that has surprisingly led Batman fans to criticize the two directors in social media posts since the announcement.
J.J. Abrams’ last directed feature was Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019), and his next original sci-fi is now marked for a 2027 release. The eight-year gap does hold a prominent place for the film, for which shifting The Batman Part II could make sense.
However, fans are not ready to accept that a six-year gap for Robert Pattinson’s Batman is justified as well. The longer the audience waits, the more expectations they create in their minds for the sequel to be bigger and better than ever. They start imagining how the sequel could be, discussing their dream villains, plot theories, and potential connections with other DC projects over Reddit threads and other online platforms.
Consequently, this poses a supreme pressure on the filmmakers for the story to surpass the first film. Although the script for The Batman Part II was written years ago, and with the growing expectations of the fans and another delay, the script could carry the risk of getting dated. Fans now yearn for a cinematic experience for one of their most beloved DC superheroes, worth the six-year wait.
Two Batman universes are already creating confusion. James Gunn’s The Brave and the Bold is a different story, for which a new Batman has not been cast yet. His story would involve Robin and their father-son relationship, which hasn’t been shown on the big screen before.
This is a good start for Gunn’s DC film, but again, his film was automatically delayed due to Reeves’ Batman Part II. Gunn would never release his Batman film, alongside Reeves’ film, as this would create problems with two Gotham cities, two Batmen, and two different continuities. Gunn would have to wait further to introduce his version and let Reeves roll his dice first.
Previously, Gunn pacified the frustrated fans who blamed Reeves for The Batman Part II’s delay. Gunn urged fans to stay calm and let Reeves do his work in peace so that the script is strong enough to be developed into a film. Unfortunately, now the constant delays are hurting the growth of Gunn’s shared universe on the whole.
