After the massive success of Weapons (2025), Zach Cregger has become one of the most sought-after names in Hollywood and is working on several projects at a time. His next Weapons prequel that focuses on Aunt Gladys’s story, The Flood, and now the Resident Evil reboot are some of the most talked-about events that fans can’t wait for.

Sony has dropped the first Resident Evil reboot teaser trailer from the Weapons (2025) and Barbarian (2022) director, Zach Cregger. The teaser was first previewed at CinemaCon 2026

Plot details of Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil (2026)

Resident Evil’s teaser takes us into the haunting journey of Austin Abram, who also appeared as a junkie in Weapons. He is seen making his way through a snowy night and finds himself at the door of a dark, empty house. He tries to make a phone call, but it is of no use.

Austin Abrams is playing Brian, a medical courier who is caught in the T-virus-infected Raccoon City. He tells his girlfriend that “some things have happened,” and he is in a really perplexing situation that could lead to not seeing each other again. He is seen running from the fast-moving creatures, including a grotesque creature, along with the naked fat man, the seemingly infected figure in a sewer setting.

Director’s vision for the film

The director, Zach Cregger, pronounced earlier that the film adaptation will be game-faithful and not film-inspired. He has never seen a Resident Evil film before, but is a true game lover.

The gamer-turned-director guaranteed that the film would not break the game’s rules but would have a new story. The statement stands true to the fact since it is connected to the Resident Evil 2 game, as it takes place simultaneously in the same city but runs parallel to the game’s events with new creatures and a new character named Brian.

As per Digital Spy, the production designer confirmed its connection to the Resident Evil 2 game by saying,

“We really designed the city based on Resident Evil 2, trying to get that look.” [Source

The fans of the game noted that the snow did not exist in the Resident Evil 2 game, but since Brian is found on another mission as an entirely new character, probably moving toward the center of the outbreak while everything is falling apart on the other side, this could indicate a bending of reality and twisting of the Resident Evil 2 game’s timelines where multiple stories might be unfolding at the same time.

The first Resident Evil (2002) film was also not a direct adaptation of the first video game but rather an original story set within the same universe. While it features the Umbrella Corporation and the T-virus, it does not take into account the game’s plot, characters, and settings (no S.T.A.R.S.), featuring an entirely new narrative by director Paul W.S. Anderson with a new protagonist, Alice (played by Milla Jovovich).

Cregger has tried his best to pay homage to the genuine visual vocabulary of the games with the same immersive sequences in first-person. Multiple references are expected, while still being designed in a way that ensures even those unfamiliar with the games can fully enjoy it.

How does the Resident Evil reboot teaser join the lone survivor horror wave?

The lone survivor trend in horror movies, often also referred to as the “final girl” trope, most commonly seen in Evil Dead films, is a foundational narrative device where a single character outlives the others. While the Resident Evil reboot teaser shows only one character, facing the threat alone, it is hard to determine at this moment whether he had companions at the beginning or not.

But as we know, the film is a “game” adaptation, and the games usually follow a single character navigating the entire experience. Modern horror films often focus on the “lone survivor” trend, as audiences are more interested in exploring the character’s mental state and psychological breakdown. While older films showed stronger, more proactive survivors who fought their way out of danger, modern horror tends to emphasize trauma and emotional damage, making the survivor feel more vulnerable and relatable.
